Lappenranta University of Technology team wins Finnish final of the CFA Institute Global Investment Research Challenge with their analysis of the Finnish paint and coatings company Tikkurila.
CFA Finland organized the Finnish leg of the CFA Institute Global Investment Research Challenge on 22 November 2010 at Ilmarinen’s premises in Helsinki. The final was part of a global investment analysis competition for university students. Groups of 3-5 students prepare an investment analysis of a local listed company. The analytical work of the student groups was supervised by an investment professional, they had access to Thomson Reuters professionals tools and they had a chance to meet the corporate executives of the target company. The competition aims to increase interest in investments research, develop the future talent of the industry and help those seeking knowledge of the field of investment research.
This was the second time the Finnish leg of the Global IRC was held. This year there were six Finnish university and college teams competing for the prize. Each team prepared a written analysis on a pre-selected Finnish listed company the three best teams were selected to attend the final. The three finalist were Lappeenranta University of Technology, Tampere University and University of Vaasa. The finalists gave an oral presentation of their research to a panel of investment professionals. The panel consisted of Ari Korhonen (Managing Director, Aktia Invest), Mika Koskinen (Head of Trading and Capital Markets, SEB), Matt Pike-Koski, CFA (Head of Hedge Fund Investments Pohjola), Petri Kuusisto (Partner, Northern Star Partners) and Timo Ritakallio (Deputy CEO, Investments, Ilmarinen).
The overall winner was selected based on both the oral and written presentation of the analysis. The winning team was from Lappeenranta University of Technology (Antto Alenius, Lasse Lemberg, Tobias Kukkasniemi, Anssi Pakarinen and Atte Rissanen). The expert jury praised all the finalists for their written reports and oral presentations. However, all five members of the panel placed Lappeenranta first. The company analysed by the Lapeenranta team was Tikkurila, the Finnish paint and coatings company, the team gave the company a strong buy recommendation.
The winning team will represent Finland in the EMEA region final in Madrid on 3 March 2011. If they win there they will continue to the global Final in Omaha on 6-7 April 2011.
In addition to their overall success the Lappeenranta University of Technology team was presented with a award for the best written analysis by the Finnish Association of Business School Graduates.
Students and professional who participated in the events agreed the competition was interesting and was a good way to provide students with practical knowledge and skills required in the work place. "The participating teams clearly invested a lot of time and effort in their analysis to produce high-quality research," commented competition organizer and CFA Finland representative Heikki Nakari.
