 CFA Program

​Entrance Requirements

To enroll in the CFA Program and register for your first Level I exam, you must have:

An international travel passport (read the ID policy) and

One of the following:

  • Undergraduate education: A bachelor's (or equivalent) degree or be in the final year of your bachelor's degree program (when you register for the Level II exam, you will be required to update your education information), or
  • Work experience: Four years of professional work experience (does not have to be investment related), or
  • A combination of professional work experience and education that totals at least four years (part-time positions do not qualify, and the four-year total must be accrued prior to enrollment).

Requirements to Become a Member

Demonstrate your commitment to the investment management profession and stay relevant in the fast-paced world of investment management by joining the world's largest association of investment professionals.

Regular Membership

We recommend regular membership for candidates in the CFA program. The application process has three phases and typically takes several weeks to be approved.

Please review the OFAC Compliance Policy. Residents of certain countries may be prohibited by law from becoming a CFA Institute or Society Member.

Online Application Checklist

Here's what you'll need to apply for CFA Institute regular membership:

  • A bachelor's degree or equivalent education/work experience
  • A passing score for the CFA Level I Exam or the self-administered Standards of Practice Examination
  • 48 months of professional work experience (<-link - includes work assessment test) in investment decision making
  • 3 professional references
  • Local CFA Society membership. (CFA Society membership is optional but strongly encouraged.) Join a CFA Society.

 Affiliate Membership

We recommend affiliate membership for investment professionals who do not intend to participate in the CFA Program or who have not yet met the requirements for regular membership.
