Membership Professional References

CFA Institute membership applications require professional references.  These references are individuals who can speak to your professional experience and conduct.  Applicants will need THREE professional references. If one reference is a regular CFA Institute and Society member, then only two references will be required.

When selecting your references, please note that they will be required to comment on your work experience and professional character. Select individuals who can attest to your responsibilities related to the investment decision-making process as defined by the work experience guidelines.

Your references will receive emailed instructions for completing the process. Your application cannot be submitted until the required reference statements have been returned.           

Attending events is a great way to meet Society members who could be potential references.  We encourage you to take a look at our calendar of events.  

Application Tips:               

  • Allow several weeks for your application to be reviewed and approved for CFA Institute membership.
  • Provide a detailed description of your daily responsibilities, including what types of clients you serve.
  • Tell CFA Institute what types of products you recommend to clients.
  • Describe how your position adds value to the investment decision-making process.
  • Provide detailed information regarding any independent analysis you perform.
  • Use the same date to end one work experience position and start the next if the positions ran consecutively.
  • Ask your reference to describe how you are engaged in work that impacts the investment decision-making process. 

Your membership application can be submitted once all sections are complete, including receipt of your professional reference statements. Your complete application is subject to review and verification by CFA Institute and CFA Society Washington, DC. Once your application is approved, you will be notified by e-mail. You may then activate your membership by paying your annual dues and filing your Professional Conduct Statement.
