Title

Shareholder Activism Panel Discussion

Event Description

What explains the seemingly sudden prominence and success of activist investing? Activist investing is not a new phenomenon. In fact, some of today's most prominent activists have been aggressively pushing for capital, managerial and operational changes in companies since the 1990s. The answer may be the growing support of institutional investors for activist campaigns.

Our distinguished panel on shareholder activism provides an inside look at the work of activism from the perspective of proxy advisors, institutional shareholders, and market participants. The panelists will draw on their experience with high-profile activist campaigns to give CFASB members insight into proxy contests, activist-initiated M&A, and defense tactics. Panelists will also debate the merits of activism and whether activists promote or destroy long-term value.

Panelists:
  • Matt Orsagh, Director, Capital Markets Policy, CFA Institute
  • Cristiano Guerra, Vice President, Institutional Investor Services
  • Jeff Gramm, Bandera Partners, author of "Dear Chairman"
Moderator:
  • Jim Allen, Head - Capital Markets Policy - Americas, Standards and Advocacy Division, CFA Institute
