Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

In Spring 2020, the CFA Society Baltimore Board of Directors convened a special committee (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee) to directly address systemic racial inequity and injustice, and more specifically, within the financial services industry.  CFASB is committed to working towards measurable change. Baltimore is a diverse community, and we believe that diversity should be reflected within the industry and organizations that we represent.  CFA Society Baltimore is wholly committed to taking necessary steps to build a more inclusive and diverse industry.

The committee established several initial objectives. While these objectives are still being mapped out, we will follow through, ensuring that real progress is being achieved.  Our goal is to create a more inclusive environment for the investment management profession in Baltimore.  The initial objectives include:

  1. Connect with community leaders and minority-based organizations to learn how CFA Society Baltimore can effectively achieve its goals and objectives with respect to social injustice.  We know we need to engage and learn how to best position the society to be part of the solution.
  2. Engage with local schools and universities, educating students on finance-related topics while also promoting the investment profession and CFA brand.  Historically, we have engaged with Loyola, Towson, University of Baltimore, and the University of Maryland.  Our future efforts will expand beyond those schools to include additional universities, with a focus on Historically Black Colleges and Universities in and around Baltimore, as well as K-12 schools.
  3. Plan and host programming events that focus on social injustice and the socioeconomic impact of the social injustice movements.  In the future, you will see more racially and culturally diverse topics and speakers.
  4. Create opportunities for dialogue between Baltimore-based firms that employ members of CFA Baltimore regarding their efforts on social injustice.  We plan to be a resource for these firms and learn about the actions they are taking regarding social injustice.

Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Mission Statement

We believe CFA Society Baltimore holds a unique position within the investment community such that we have members from a wide variety of firms and organizations, and we sit at an intersection between universities and professional institutions. Aligned with our overall mission of leading the investment profession locally by promoting the highest standards of ethics, education, and professional excellence for our community's ultimate benefit, our goal is to use this position to promote a more inclusive investment management community in Baltimore. It is our view that diversity of race, ethnicity, and gender within the investment management industry leads to cognitive diversity that improves firm results and performance. Specifically, we look to promote diversity and inclusion within the CFA community and financial services industry more broadly by actively engaging with community and business leaders to share ideas and best practices, engaging with local schools and universities to serve as mentors and educate minority students about careers in the investment profession, and to facilitate discussion amongst our own members regarding topics related to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
