Bocconi series 2017: from nudging to engaging in pension

Event Description

The concept of nudging people to behave in a certain way is not new and has had demonstrable success in many areas of public policy. But our understanding of how these nudges work and how they apply to our lives has increased dramatically in recent years thanks to advances in behavioural science.

The most obvious problem area in personal finance is in retirement saving. The decision to save is a relatively complex choice that suffers disproportionately from inertia and the fact that the costs, felt now in terms of foregone monthly income diverted into a pension account, are separated in time from the benefits felt later in retirement.

The policy of auto-enrolment may be a watermark for more informed policy designed to nudge people to act in the right way. However, success should not be measured by simply getting lots of people enrolled into a plan. It is also about keeping them involved, minimising opt-out rates, and critically, building up their retirement plan over time.

So how can we move things on beyond just a nudge?

Join us for the 8th edition of our Bocconi Series, to hear Prof. Barbara Alemanni present how behavioural psychology is clearly the key to long-term success.
