Title

Sources of Volatility in 2016: Applying the Physics of Phase Transitions to Markets

Event Description

Plan on attending the Society luncheon as we welcome Bluford Putnam, Managing Director and Chief Economist of CME Group.  Mr. Putnam will discuss sources of volatility in the upcoming year and how the different phases of transitions will affect the financial markets.  Key phase transitions include:

  • US GDP – Retiring boomers to be a drag on the economy
  • Fed – The path for interest rate increases may be very slow because there is little to no inflation pressure even as the unemployment rate continues to drift downward
  • Energy – The surprise in 2016 may be a sharp drop in North American crude oil production
  • China – As the growth deceleration continues, the Chinese yuan (RMB) may drift lower and lower
  • Ag & Energy – El Nino has the potential to abruptly shift to La Nina, suggesting a higher probability for a very cold 2016-17 winter in the US heartland
  • Metals – The big metals (gold, copper, iron ore) are depressed, but the smart metals (lithium, cobalt, graphite, titanium) are on a roll
