In the paper "Short-termism Revisited", CFA Institute looks again at the topic of short-termism in the financial markets. CFA Institute first wrote on this topic in the 2006 report "Breaking the Short-term Cycle" which explored ways that market participants could think and act with a longer-term orientation in their investment processes. In this follow up report, we explore what has changed in the intervening years, what progress has been made and what challenges still remain concerning the issue of short-termism. In this report, CFA Institute also partnered with Fund Governance Analytics to take a more thorough academic look at the issue, crunching the numbers going back nearly 3 decades to see how companies in the US do and do not act with a short-term bias, and whether investors reward or punish them for such actions.
Please join us to hear from Matt Orsagh, CFA, CIPM - CFA Institute, Sarah Peck, Ph.D – Marquette University, and Ariel Fromer Babcock, CFA – Focusing Capital on the Long Term as they discuss short-termism.
