Bias, noise, misinformation, and a desire to weave compelling stories corrupt business decisions. Nobel Prize-winning Daniel Kahneman describes how business leaders race to conclusions, prodded along by faulty System I Thinking (fast, reflexive, enables story-telling) while squeezing out the crucial contributions of their analytic System II (slower, supervisory, data-based) cognitive and institutional structures.
Dr. Singer, an experimental psychologist who worked at AT&T's Bell Laboratories and then morphed into a telecom executive spanning a 36 year career, describes these competing approaches to decision-making and applies them to real-world experiences – both positive and negative. He dissects the nature of crucial errors and the role of bias and other cognitive illusions in making those errors. He provides a roadmap to eliminating major errors by establishing paradigms and cultural changes. These paradigms, he argues, improve M&A results, achieve growth, and gross margin objectives, and detect fraud.
Dr. Singer currently serves as the Executive Director of the Seller-Lehrer Family Foundation and a member of the Vanderbilt Graduate and Research Advisory Board. He served as PCTEL's Chairman and CEO for 16 years, President of SAFCO Technologies (wireless test and measurement), Vice-President of Motorola's Cellular Infrastructure Group, Tellabs, AT&T, and Bell Labs. He is an active investor in Broadway musicals, notably Hamilton, Avenue Q, In the Heights, Rent, Cher, The Last Ship, and West Side Story.
