The CFA Society Ottawa supports the business and professional growth of local investment professionals. Aligned with our mission, we are continually seeking volunteers to: promote awareness of the CFA charter amongst the local community, key employers and the investing public; and providing opportunities for the local financial community to gather in a collegial atmosphere of knowledge sharing and networking.

Board of Directors

President
  • Organizes and chairs (monthly) meetings with the Executives
  • Exercise general supervision and control of the affairs of the society, with direct oversight responsibility for each board member and their supported chair and volunteer positions
  • Develops the CFA Society Ottawa’s strategic plan
  • Reviews annual financial statements of CFA Society Ottawa
  • Authorizes payments as signing officer for CFA Society Ottawa 
  • Attends CFA Society Ottawa organized events
  • Attends national and international annual CFA Institute organized conferences
  • Responsible for ongoing awareness campaign for the CFA designation in Ottawa
  • Unless otherwise appointed as a member thereof, be an ex officio, nonvoting member of each Society committee
  • Have such other duties and powers as prescribed in the Bylaws, the Articles of Incorporation, by the Board, and by law
  • Effectuate all orders and resolutions of the Board 
  • Responsible for position’s policies, procedures, and action plan as it relates to the CFA Society Ottawa’s Mission Statement and Strategic Objective
Total time commitment 15 - 20 hours per month

Vice President
  • Contributes to the development of the CFA Society Ottawa’s strategic plan
  • Authorizes payments as signing officer for CFA Society Ottawa
  • Responsible for development and oversight of strategic initiatives (i.e. introduction of new programs, events, etc.)
  • Participates in CFA Society Ottawa’s (monthly) Executive meetings
  • Participates in CFA Society Ottawa’s organized events
  • Attends national and international annual CFA Institute organized conferences
  • Perform the duties of the president in his or her absent
  • Automatically become the President of the Society in the event of the President's incapacity, resignation, removal, or death, until the Board may convene to appoint a new President
  • Have such other duties and powers as prescribed in the Bylaws, the Articles of Incorporation, by the Board, and by law
  • Responsible for position’s policies, procedures, and action plan as it relates to the CFA Society Ottawa’s Mission Statement and Strategic Objective
  • Exercise general supervision and have oversight responsibility for each the following positions: Strategic Initiative Chair, Program Chair, Employer Engagement Chair and their supporting volunteer positions
Total time commitment approximately 10-20 hours per month

Treasurer
  • The Treasurer shall prepare the following reports as noted:
  • A draft annual budget shall be submitted to the Board for discussion prior to August 31st of each new fiscal year and receive majority board approval no later than September 30th.  Budget shall include one year forward looking (i) income statement, (ii) balance sheet, and (iii) monthly cash flow statement Financial statements (i.e. income statement, balance sheet, and cash flow with notes as appropriate) shall be submitted to the Board no less than semi-annually in January and June. 
  • Coordinate unaudited annual financial statements and preparation of Notice To Reader with selected practitioner, KPMG, or their successor for board approval prior to July 31
  • Post unaudited financial statements and Notice to Reader for member review
  • The Treasurer shall provide a recommendation to the Board each June regarding modification and/or approval of the Investment Policy Statement
  • The Treasurer shall provide a semi-annual review of compliance with the Investment Policy Statement to the Board January and June
  • By June of each fiscal year, a comparison analysis along with discussion between actual results and budgeted results will be made available for the Board 
  • As deemed necessary by the Board, update the accounting opinion with regards to taxation and filling. 
  • Exercise general supervision and have oversight responsibility for each the following positions: Education Chair, Administrator, and supporting volunteer positions.
Total time commitment 5-10 hours per month

Secretary
  • Periodically reviews society bylaws and governing principles to ensure ongoing compliance.
  • Communicate the date, time and place of meetings 
  • Sets agendas, prepares minutes, and obtains ongoing project listings and event calendars from volunteers to include in the preparation and distribution of meeting packages for Executive meetings
  • Comply with all requests for information from CFA Institute
  • Attends CFA Society Ottawa’s organized events
  • Responsible for reviewing the strategic plan and monitors progress towards strategic annual objectives 
  • Attends national and international annual CFA Institute organized conferences
  • Maintain the corporate seal and certify the authenticity of Board actions and officer signatures;
  • Have such other duties and powers as prescribed in the Bylaws, the Articles of Incorporation, by the Board, and by law
  • Responsible for position’s policies, procedures, board manual, Society calendar, and action plan as it relates to the CFA Society Ottawa’s Mission Statement and Strategic Objective 
  • Exercise general supervision and have oversight responsibility for each the following positions: Public Awareness Chair, Communications Chair, and supporting volunteer positions.

Total time commitment 5-10 hours per month

Past President
  • Assists the Secretary with updating the Board manual based on the annual review
  • Responsible for the management of new Society volunteer recruitment
  • Responsible for coaching and mentoring of new Society volunteers to support their development and contribution to the Society.  This entails at least one coaching and/or mentoring session with each new volunteer within the first year of them becoming a volunteer 
  • Exercise general supervision and have oversight responsibility for each the following positions: Membership Chair, and Other Volunteers.
Total time commitment 5-10 hours per month

Executive Committee

Strategic Initiatives Chair
  • Responsible for organizing annual forecast dinner, Women In Investment Management programming, and other strategic initiatives
  • Responsible for identification, recommendation and confirmation of potential speakers for the above events 
  • Responsible for feedback from the above events.
  • Participate in CFA Society Ottawa’s (monthly) Executive meetings
  • Attend CFA Society Ottawa’s organized events
  • Coordinate programming events with CFA Institute
  • Collaborating with other society program offerings or other organizations.
  • Responsible for position’s policies, procedures, and action plan as it relates to the CFA Society Ottawa’s Mission Statement and Strategic Objective
  • Responsible for the oversight of volunteers that aid in the execution of the role’s responsibilities

Total time commitment – approximately 10-15 hours per month

Program Chair
  • Responsible for identification, recommendation and confirmation of potential speakers for membership programming. 
  • Responsible for organizing luncheons and networking events
  • Responsible for feedback from programs.
  • Participate in CFA Society Ottawa’s (monthly) Executive meetings
  • Attend CFA Society Ottawa’s organized events
  • Coordinate programming events with CFA Institute
  • Collaborating with other society program offerings or other organizations.
  • Responsible for position’s policies, procedures, and action plan as it relates to the CFA Society Ottawa’s Mission Statement and Strategic Objective
  • Responsible for the oversight of volunteers that aid in the execution of the role’s responsibilities
Total time commitment – approximately 10-15 hours per month

Employer Engagement Chair
  • Develop and foster meaningful relationships with employers in the Ottawa region
  • Organize and coordinate employer outreach efforts to promote the CFA designation 
  • Responsible for the management of the CFA Society Ottawa Ambassador Program
  • Responsible for the job posting program on behalf of the CFA Society Ottawa
  • Responsible for developing society sponsorship platform and soliciting ongoing contributions
  • Responsible for organizing the annual career fair
  • Participate in CFA Society Ottawa’s (monthly) Executive meetings
  • Attend CFA Society Ottawa’s organized events
  • Communicate the needs/interests of local employers to the Society, other applicable Society’s and the CFA Institute
  • Responsible for position’s policies, procedures, and action plan as it relates to the CFA Society Ottawa’s Mission Statement and Strategic Objective
  • Responsible for the oversight of volunteers that aid in the execution of the role’s responsibilities
Total time commitment is approximately 5-10 hours per month

Education Chair
  • Responsible for organizing the CFA Ottawa Forum Conference
  • Promote and enhance continuing education for Charterholders through organizing events to enhance technical skills to promote lifelong learning
  • Responsible for developing an education curriculum to help students better plan their financial future.
  • Responsible for delivering educational programming to students at local universities, colleges, secondary, and elementary schools. 
  • Assists and supports financial research challenges, student competitions, etc.
  • Building relationships with candidates and potential candidates
  • Organizes mock exam and prepares programs for Ottawa area candidates
  • Attends CFA Society Ottawa’s organized events
  • Promotes continuing education for CFA Charterholders in the Ottawa area
  • Responsible for university outreach
  • Responsible for promoting scholarship programs
  • Responsible for position’s policies, procedures, and action plan as it relates to the CFA Society Ottawa’s Mission Statement and Strategic Objective
  • Responsible for the oversight of volunteers that aid in the execution of the role’s responsibilities
Total time commitment 10-15 hours per month

Public Awareness Chair
  • Responsible for increasing awareness for the value of the CFA Charterholders amongst local employers and investors
  • Responsible for building relationships with local media, as well as outreach in advance of applicable Society events
  • Responsible for managing the sponsorship and media relationships
  • Coordinate brand campaigns with CFA Institute and other Societies
  • Working with Communications Chair, responsible for all non-member specific external communications
  • Attends CFA Society Ottawa’s organized events
  • Responsible for position’s policies, procedures, and action plan as it relates to the CFA Society Ottawa’s Mission Statement and Strategic Objective
  • Responsible for the oversight of volunteers that aid in the execution of the role’s responsibilities
Total time commitment 5-10 hours per month

Communications Chair 
  • Provide oversight and direction for all society communication and interaction with members, regardless of channel, in support of the society’s goals and priority.  
  • Prepare quarterly newsletters and oversee programming the preparation of flyers for society events
  • Leverage the Society Administration and outside specialized resources to execute on society communication.  
  • Responsible for position’s policies, procedures, and action plan as it relates to the CFA Society Ottawa’s Mission Statement and Strategic Objective
  • Responsible for the oversight of volunteers that aid in the execution of the role’s responsibilities
Total time commitment is approximately 5-10 hours per month 

Membership Chair
  • Manages Society’s membership review process
  • Responsible for overseeing the planning and execution of the new Charterholder recognition event
  • Establish guidelines and procedures for Mentorship program
  • Responsible for coordination of Mentor/Mentee process
  • Ensure goals and objectives of Mentee are being met through follow up and feedback mechanism
  • Participates in CFA Society Ottawa’s (monthly) Executive meetings
  • Attends CFA Society Ottawa’s organized events
  • Support Society initiatives to sustain and increase membership
  • Responsible for position’s policies, procedures, and action plan as it relates to the CFA Society Ottawa’s Mission Statement and Strategic Objective
  • Responsible for the oversight of volunteers that aid in the execution of the role’s responsibilities
Total time commitment is approximately 5-10 hours per month
