Session on Trading Algorithms and Data Driven Trading
CFA Society Pakistan and The Nest I/O jointly hosted an informative session on ‘Trading Algorithms and Data Driven Trading’ by Mr. Ashar Mahboob, Co-Founder of Quantbot Technologies LP on 5th December 2019.
During the session, the speaker highlighted how algorithms driven platforms have increased the efficiency of market neutral traders. From strategy to acquisition in 0.1 microseconds, conversion of news into numeric signals, the influx of algorithms is changing even how fundamental traders approach trading.
Sessions on ‘Pakistan Public Debt – Outlook and Challenges’
CFA Society Pakistan invited Director General Debt, Ministry of Finance, Mr. Abdul Rehman Warraich, CFA, FRM on 28th October 2019 for a two way session with capital market professionals where he shared his insights on how Pakistan’s Debt Management policy was evolving and gained feedback from capital market professionals on different strategies under consideration. The event was much appreciated by the audience in Karachi and the same event was organized in Lahore on 23rd November 2019 for members and capital market professionals.
Global Ethics Day
To celebrate the Global Ethics Day, CFA Society Pakistan joined hands with ACCA, British Deputy High Commission – Karachi, and The Pakistan Business Council’s Center of Excellence in Responsible Business (CERB) to conduct a series of events in Karachi, Islamabad and Lahore on 9th October, 16th October and 19th October 2019 respectively.
The event saw thought-provoking panel discussion between C-level industry executives, think tanks and other senior professionals and speeches by eloquent speakers.

Financial Modeling Workshop
CFA Society Pakistan collaborated with an Int'l Training Firm, The Marquee Group (based in Canada), to provide an extensive training workshop for financial modeling enthusiasts in Pakistan. Three full-house sessions were arranged in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad on 16th, 19th and 20th September 2019 respectively. In addition to the basic financial modelling training, an extended training on Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) Valuation was also organized in Karachi on 17th September 2019.
The workshops saw overwhelming response from several leading local and multinational institutions along with CFA Society Members, CFA Candidates and employees of SECP (Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan) who attended the training.

Putting Investors First – Managing Business in Pakistan

Lahore School of Economics organized a conference on Managing Business in Pakistan on April 21, 2017. The two day conference was aimed at exploring the reality of Pakistan's macroeconomic framework which has been unfavourably battered by the security situation and economic mismanagement in the country. The conference also highlighted how other countries increase profits and seek benefits from investors, and how those techniques can be applied to Pakistan.
CFA Society sponsored the conference and .our esteemed members Abdul Rehman Warraich, CFA, Dr. Kumail Rizvi, CFA and Ashraf Bava, CFA were some of the speakers at the conference. The conference was qualified for 14 CE hours for CFA Institute members.
An Open Discussion on Current Market Situation

The Pakistan stock market had witnessed considerable turmoil in the past few weeks falling from a high of 52,876 in May 15 to around 44,300 lately. There have been various positive and negative factors at play – from inclusion in the MSCI Emerging Market Index to political uncertainty to Pakistan Cricket Team winning the Champions trophy!

FINTECH TALK – FUTURE STATE OF INVESTMENT PROFESSION

Mr. Larry Cao, Director Content, CFA Institute Asia Pacific Hong Kong Office, conducted the session and covered the issues and benefits of fintech. In the two hour session, we had a mix of attendees from banking and IT industry. Our senior member, Mr. Inayat Hussain, CFA, Executive Director, State Bank of Pakistan also gave a speech at the session.
Fintech has taken the financial services industry by storm. Industry professionals are somewhat concerned about how fintech will affect their employers and their own career prospects. So what exactly is fintech? What value does FinTech hold for clients? In what area has FinTech been most successful? Where will FinTech have the most impact in the financial services industry? In attempting to answer these questions, the discussion of the day was to find ways to avoid the potential risk posed by the changes and take advantage of the possible benefits provided by the latest innovations.
Putting Investors First - Investment and Tax Savings Workshop

Aga Khan University organized a panel session for doctors, students and AKU staff members on Investment and Tax Savings on August 28, 2017. This was part of CFA Society Pakistan's Putting Investors First Initiative to create awareness about a fair investing climate among people.

The Asia-Pacific Research Exchange – Meetings in August and November 2016
The Asia-Pacific Research Exchange is the latest big endeavor by CFA Institute whereby they are hoping to pool in and stimulate research specific to the region in areas related to investment management. CFA Institute is in the unique position of having solid presence across the region with a body of highly regarded professionals in the local industry. The portal invites research industry professionals and offers a highly credible and professional viewership for the research. Dr. Tony Tan, CFA is heading the project from the CFA Institute.
