Putting Investors First – Managing Business in Pakistan

Lahore School of Economics organized a conference on Managing Business in Pakistan on April 21, 2017. The two day conference was aimed at exploring the reality of Pakistan's macroeconomic framework which has been unfavourably battered by the security situation and economic mismanagement in the country. The conference also highlighted how other countries increase profits and seek benefits from investors, and how those techniques can be applied to Pakistan.

CFA Society sponsored the conference and .our esteemed members Abdul Rehman Warraich, CFA, Dr. Kumail Rizvi, CFA and Ashraf Bava, CFA were some of the speakers at the conference.  The conference was qualified for 14 CE hours for CFA Institute members.

 

 

An Open Discussion on Current Market Situation

The Pakistan stock market had witnessed considerable turmoil in the past few weeks falling from a high of 52,876 in May 15 to around 44,300 lately. There have been various positive and negative factors at play – from inclusion in the MSCI Emerging Market Index to political uncertainty to Pakistan Cricket Team winning the Champions trophy!

 

Accordingly, CFA Society Pakistan held a series of candid panel discussions with CEOs and CIOs of leading asset management companies and brokerage houses to understand what happened and what to expect going forward.

FINTECH TALK – FUTURE STATE OF INVESTMENT PROFESSION

Mr. Larry Cao, Director Content, CFA Institute Asia Pacific Hong Kong Office, conducted the session and covered the issues and benefits of fintech. In the two hour session, we had a mix of attendees from banking and IT industry. Our senior member, Mr. Inayat Hussain, CFA, Executive Director, State Bank of Pakistan also gave a speech at the session.  

 

Fintech has taken the financial services industry by storm. Industry professionals are somewhat concerned about how fintech will affect their employers and their own career prospects. So what exactly is fintech? What value does FinTech hold for clients? In what area has FinTech been most successful? Where will FinTech have the most impact in the financial services industry? In attempting to answer these questions, the discussion of the day was to find ways to avoid the potential risk posed by the changes and take advantage of the possible benefits provided by  the latest innovations.

 

 

Putting Investors First - Investment and Tax Savings Workshop

Aga Khan University organized a panel session for doctors, students and AKU staff members on Investment and Tax Savings on August 28, 2017. This was part of CFA Society Pakistan's Putting Investors First Initiative to create awareness about a fair investing climate among people.

The Asia-Pacific Research Exchange – Meetings in August and November 2016

The Asia-Pacific Research Exchange is the latest big endeavor by CFA Institute whereby they are hoping to pool in and stimulate research specific to the region in areas related to investment management. CFA Institute is in the unique position of having solid presence across the region with a body of highly regarded professionals in the local industry. The portal invites research industry professionals and offers a highly credible and professional viewership for the research. Dr. Tony Tan, CFA is heading the project from the CFA Institute.

Dr. Tony Tan, CFA (Head Standards and Financial Market Integrity Division at CFA Institute, Asia Pacific Region), Mr. Abdul Rehman Warraich, CFA (Debt Management Specialist at Government of Punjab) and Mr. Yaser Manzoor, Director/HoD Surveillance, Supervision and Enforcement Department – Securities Market Division, SECP. The members especially enjoyed Dr. Tony’s deeply perceptive insights on the subject.

Centre of Excellence in Responsible Business (CERB) has been setup by the Pakistan Business Council (PBC) comprising representation from the eminent business groups of Pakistan. This was the first of CERB’s Transformational Business Coalition Guest Speaker Sessions. This particular talk, ‘Why Behaving Ethically Is So Hard’, by Dr Tony Tan of the CFA Institute, comes under CERB’s Ethics, Values and Governance Forum, which is dedicated to promoting responsible practices, which will strengthen the formal sector in pursuit of sustainable value creation.

CDC House and CFA Society Pakistan jointly hosted breakfast at the excellent facility at CDC House in the honor of Mr. Attila Koksal, CFA (Member Board of Governors, CFA Institute) and Dr. Tony Tan, CFA (Head Advocacy APAC Region, CFA Institute) where they interacted with the leaders in brokerage and mutual funds industry as well as other industry specialists.

The Overseas Investors Chamber of Commerce & Industry (OICCI) graciously invited them for lunch at the Boat Club along with prominent industry representatives.

Our guests from CFA Institute had very good interaction with the guests where they also discussed CFA Institute’s efforts towards building trust in local capital markets through emphasis on ethics and expertise. View photos.

Panel Discussion On "Putting Investors First" By CFA Society Pakistan

Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP), Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) and CFA Society Pakistan (CFASP) jointly organized a panel discussion to discuss issues on protecting investor rights and promoting transparency and fair investing environment in Pakistan capital markets. The esteemed panelist included:

  • Ms. Khalida Habib, Director Investor Education & International Relations, Securities & Exchange Commission of Pakistan;
  • Mr. Nasim Beg, Vice Chairman, MCB Arif Habib Savings & Investments Ltd;
  • Mr. Nadeem Naqvi, Managing Director, Pakistan Stock Exchange;
  • Mr. Muhammad Aliuddin Ansari, Chairman Advisory Board, Alfalah Securities; and
  • Mr. Shehzad Chamdia, Chairman Divestment Committee Pakistan Stock Exchange

The profile and mix of panelists stimulated a lively discussion from various point of views ranging from the challenges faced to reach out to investors, pros and cons of various regulatory measures, to the stock market crisis of 2008. The interaction with participants was stimulating and some new ideas were also floated which were appreciated by all.

CFASP earlier signed an MOU with SECP for joint conduct of activities on promotion of investor rights and related areas with support of CFA Institute. In this regard, the "Statement of Investor Rights" (SOIRs) developed by CFA Institute, was translated into Urdu and both English and Urdu versions were widely publicized for investor education during the year. The SOIRs advise buyers of financial service products of the conduct they are entitled to expect from financial service providers. These rights emphasize on ethical principles that are critical to achieve confidence and trust in any professional relationship. Investor protection promotes investor confidence by reassuring investors that their interests are being safeguarded against market malpractices and recourse against such malpractices is available.

 

Seminar on "Financial Literacy & Personal Financial Planning"

Mr. Ashraf Bava President CFA Society Pakistan and CEO Nael Capital (Pvt) Limited prepared a presentation on "Role of Broker, Rights & Responsibilities of Investor, Grievance Forums" in Islamabad on 17th December 2015 at a Seminar on "Financial Literacy and Personal Financial Planning" organized by SECP for the students of business schools of Islamabad. Statement of Investor Rights produced by CFA Institute was part of his presentation. There were other senior personalities of the industry including MD NIT Mr. Shahid Ghaffar, MD KSE Mr. Nadeem Naqvi, CEO SAOO Capital Mr. Ali Saeed, Chairman SECP Mr. Zafar Hijazi and Chairman HEC Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad who made the session a great success.

 

Conference with Lahore School of Economics

For the past three years, Lahore School of Economics (LSE) has been convening their Annual Business Research Conferences in collaboration with CFA Society Pakistan. Their 3rd Annual Business Research Conference on 'Managing Business in Pakistan' was organized on 10-11 April 2015 at LSE, Lahore. Mr. Nadeem Naqvi, Managing Director, Karachi Stock Exchange (KSE), Mr. Akif Saeed, Commissioner, SECP and Mr. Muhammad Sajid, CFA, Partner, JS Private Equity presented on behalf of CFA Society Pakistan. 

 

Mr. Paul Smith's Visit to Pakistan – December 2014

Mr. Paul Smith, CFA – Managing Director, Asia Pacific, CFA Institute, Hong Kong hosted the Opening Bell Ceremony held on Dec 4th 2014 at the Karachi Stock Exchange during his visit. He also met Mr. Nadeem Naqvi, CFA (Managing Director, KSE) where they exchanged ideas and discussed the importance of promoting CFA program.

We arranged several meetings where the CFA board and Mr. Paul Smith shared their ideas with employers and professional bodies and proposed to develop a relationship with them so as to facilitate charter holders to avail job opportunities and to grow in their careers.

Workshop with Institute of Capital Markets

We conducted full day Financial Literacy & Ethics Workshops in collaboration with the Institute of Capital Markets (ICM) in Lahore, Islamabad and Karachi on 21st, 23rd and 29th April 2014 respectively. The workshop covered the basic concepts on ethics and finance for journalists, junior staff of the exchanges, regulators, AMCs, brokerage houses, banks, DFIs, NBFIs, etc. The office bearers of CFA Society Pakistan conducted the workshop including Mr. Ashraf Bava, CFA (President/ Advocacy Chair), Mr. Mir Muhammad Ali, CFA (Career Services/Director) & Mr. Kashif Shamraiz, CFA (Treasurer/ Membership & Volunteers/Director).

 

Live Streaming Sessions

A Live Streaming Session on "Numbers and Narratives: Modeling, Storytelling, and Investing" By Professor Aswath Damodaran was arranged on November 20, 2014, at the Board Room of NBP Fullerton Asset Management Limited (NAFA). Aswath Damodaran is a professor of finance and has authored articles in such publications as the Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis and the Journal of Finance.

 

Awareness Seminar with Karachi Stock Exchange & BMA

An investor awareness seminar on Exploring Investment Opportunities in Pakistan's Capital Markets was conducted on 20th June 2014 in Lahore jointly by BMA Capital and Karachi Stock Exchange Ltd. Speakers at the event were Mr. Moazzam M. Malik, Chairman & CEO-BMA Capital and Mr. Nadeem Naqvi, Managing Director-Karachi Stock Exchange Ltd. A short presentation was made on CFA Institute's Statement of Investor Rights by Mr. Affan Bin Mahmood, CFA. This successful seminar was appreciated all over.
