Behavioral FinanceSociety, Educational
Based on a new methodology of defining a corporate sustainability framework, Dan diBartolomeo will look at the economic sustainability of stocks that are considered sustainable from a social point of view. Dan will review and discuss the framework which was presented in his Journal of Investing article (winter 2010) that calculates an expected life of a company based on the premise that credit risk is brought about by the fact that stockholders have an implicit call option on debt of a company. This expected life number can be viewed as an alternative measure of risk and shows some relationship to social sustainability.

Mr. diBartolomeo is President and founder of Northfield Information Services, Inc., based in Boston. Since 1986, Northfield develops quantitative models of financial markets. Additional Northfield staff members are located in London, Moscow, Toronto, Tokyo and Chicago. The firm’s clients include more than two hundred financial institutions in a dozen countries.

2/29/2012 8:00 AM2/29/2012 12:30 PM0Debt Ratings Agencies: Their Role in the Global Debt Capital Markets – Past, Present and Future
Performance Measurement and Evaluation, Risk ManagementSociety
A Joint Program with the Global Interdependence Center.

February 29, 2012
8:00 AM - 12:30 PM
Federal Reserve Bank
Philadelphia

Debt ratings agencies are instrumental to the debt capital markets. Firms such as S&P, Moody’s and Egan Jones commit considerable resources assessing the creditworthiness of borrowers, enabling investors and lenders to make, hopefully, informed credit decisions.

However, with the onset of the global financial crisis, there are many questions. Does the present debt rating system actually work? Is it proactive, or reactive? How was the present system created? Are there conflicts of interest? What impact does "politics" have with respect to rating determinations? Most importantly, does the present system and process serve investors adequately by providing independent information?

Please join us on February 29th at the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia as we address these questions.

Jim Allen of CFA Institute will lead a panel discussion in which John Carbone of Vanguard, Natalie Cohen of Wells Fargo and Peter Demirali of Cumberland Advisors will share their views on the present ratings systems as it relates to money market funds, municipal securities, corporate debt securities and asset backed securities.

David Kotok of Cumberland Advisors will lead a panel discussion in which Mark Adelson of S&P and Bill Hassiepen of Egan Jones Ratings Services will compare and contrast "issuer paid research" and "investor paid research". The essence of this conversation relates to the truly independent nature of rating agency research.

Norbert Gaillard, author of the book "A Century of Sovereign Ratings" will provide insight on sovereign debt ratings, an extremely relevant topic following the August 2011 downgrade of the US Treasury by S&P and the present European financial crisis.

Peter Kerstens will represent global investors’ assessment of US ratings agencies.

Catherine Mann, Barbara ’54 and Richard M. Rosenberg Professor of Global Finance International Business School, Brandeis University and Visiting Scholar, Federal Reserve Bank of Boston , will present the keynote on "The evolution of Credit Default Swaps and their relevance for the debt capital markets going forward."

The mission of this conference is to provide knowledge for our guests, thus enabling them to better understand the debt ratings process and, as a result, be able to more fully serve their clients and constituents.

3/15/2012 12:00 PM3/15/2012 1:30 PM0Downtown Luncheon:  Boombustology
Behavioral Finance, Economics, Risk ManagementSociety, Educational

Boombustology presents a multi-disciplinary framework for identifying unsustainable booms and forthcoming busts.

The magnitude of our recent financial crisis mandates a firm understanding of this phenomenon before the next crisis occurs. Boombustology provides an in-depth look at several major booms and busts and offers a solid framework for thinking about future occurrences.

  • Examines why booms and busts are not random and can therefore be identified
  • Focuses upon various theoretical and disciplinary lenses useful in the study of booms and busts
  • Contains a framework for thinking about and identifying forthcoming financial bubbles including several tell-tale indicators of a forthcoming bust.
  • Illustrates the framework in action by evaluating China as a potential bubble in the making.

If you want to make better decisions in today’s turbulent investment environment, understanding the dynamics of booms and busts is the best place the start. Boombustology can help you achieve this elusive goal.

Vikram Mansharamani is our featured speaker for this event.  Mansharamani an experienced global equity investor and Lecturer at Yale University.  He is the author of BOOMBUSTOLOGY: Spotting Financial Bubbles Before They Burst and is a regular commentator in the financial media, having contributed to Bloomberg, CNBC, Forbes, Fortune, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Atlantic, YaleGlobal, The South China Morning Post, The Korea Times, The Khaleej Times, and The Daily Beast, among others.

He earned a PhD and MS from the Sloan School of Management at MIT, an MS in Political Science from MIT, and a BA from Yale University. He currently lives in Brookline, Massachusetts with his wife and two children.

Corporate Finance, Financial Statement Analysis, Performance Measurement and EvaluationSociety, Career, Educational

CFAP is pleased to offer, in partnership with Wall Street Prep, one of the investment profession's most popular courses. This goal of this program is to equip busy professionals and students with the financial skills they need on the job.

During this intensive 2-day training, participants will learn financial and valuation modeling in Excel using a hands-on, case-study approach.

Modeling methodologies covered include financial statement modeling, valuation & DCF modeling and trading & transaction comps modeling. Instructors are all practitioners (investment bankers, equity research analysts, etc.) with a passion for teaching and years of directly relevant real-world experience.

Day 1:   Financial Statement Modeling in Excel

Participants develop a model completely from scratch, inputting historical data and assumptions to project out financial statements using step-by-step instruction on selecting, locating, and developing appropriate projection drivers. At completion, participants will have developed a complete and comprehensive three-statement model using various supporting schedules.

Day 2:   Valuation and DCF Modeling

Valuation represents the heart of the investment banking and corporate finance skill set. Before building valuation models, participants will learn the conceptual underpinnings of the valuation framework:

• Enterprise valuation vs. market valuation

• Intrinsic valuation vs. relative valuation

• Participants identify and analyze the elements of the financial statement that are key to the value of an enterprise.

• Treatment of options, preferred stock, minority interests, debt, cash and marketable securities

• An overview to market-based and intrinsic valuation, including comparable company analysis and comparable transaction analysis using appropriate equity and enterprise value multiples (PE, EV/EBITDA,

etc.), as well as DCF and LBO valuation.

Though we ultimately believe a short-term deal to delay the effects of the "fiscal cliff" will be reached, how Congress chooses to bridge the cliff is likely to include a contentious debate that will come with economic consequences of its own.

Standards, Ethics, and RegulationsSociety, Educational

When Dodd-Frank Act was enacted, it represented the most sweeping regulatory change to the financial services industry since the 1930s. Since that time, the SEC has been proposing and adopting rules required by Dodd-Frank that impact how investment advisory firms operate their businesses. We'll discuss a number of developments arising out of Dodd-Frank, the impact of those changes on investment advisers, and how the regulatory landscape continues to shift for registered investment advisors.

We are fortunate to have assembled a panel of experts consisting of legal and regulatory compliance professionals who work with investment advisory firms, as well as a representative from the SEC, who will identify and discuss these important developments, as well as how investment advisors can best address them:

Fixed IncomeSociety, Educational
The value of the $3.7 trillion municipal-bond market may drop by $200 billion, or about 5 percent, under President Obama's plan to limit income-tax deductions to 28 percent.  To make up for reducing the amount of investment earnings that can be deducted from federal income taxes, investors will demand that tax-exempt yields rise by at least 0.6 percentage point, George Friedlander, senior muni strategist at New York- based Citigroup, wrote in his report earlier this month.

Friedlander, managing director and chief municipal strategist with Citi Investment Research & Analysis, will share his viewson the muni bond market.  He has almost four decades of municipal credit experience. He has received awards from the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association and has repeatedly been named to Institutional Investor's All-America Fixed-Income Research team. The past year has seen some dramatic developments play out in his area of expertise.  Come here his views on what's to come in this important fixed income sector.

4/4/2013 12:00 PM4/4/2013 1:30 PM0Downtown Luncheon:  Investing:  The Last Liberal Art
Portfolio ManagementSociety, Educational

Robert G. Hagstrom is one of the best-known authors of investment books for general audiences. Turning his extensive experience as a portfolio manager at Legg Mason Capital Management into valuable guidance for professionals and nonprofessionals alike, he is the author of six successful books on investment, including The Warren Buffett Way, a New York Times best-seller that has sold more than a million copies.

In Investing: The Last Liberal Art, Hagstrom explores basic and fundamental investing concepts in a range of fields outside of economics, including physics, biology, sociology, psychology, philosophy, and literature. He discusses, for instance, how the theory of evolution disrupts the notion of the efficient market and how reading strategies for literature can be gainfully applied to investing research.

Building on Charlie Munger's famous "latticework of mental models" concept, Hagstrom argues that it is impossible to make good investment decisions based solely on a strong knowledge of finance theory alone. He reinforces his concepts with additional data and a new chapter on mathematics, and updates his text throughout to reflect the developments of the past decade, particularly the seismic economic upheaval of 2008. He has also added a hundred new titles to the invaluable reading list concluding the book.

Come hear Mr. Hagstrom talk about his book and about his investment perspectives.

    * Enterprise valuation vs. market valuation

    * Intrinsic valuation vs. relative valuation

    * Participants identify and analyze the elements of the financial statement that are key to the value of an enterprise.

    * Treatment of options, preferred stock, minority interests, debt, cash and marketable securities

    * An overview to market-based and intrinsic valuation, including comparable company analysis and comparable transaction analysis using appropriate equity and enterprise value multiples (PE, EV/EBITDA,

etc.), as well as DCF and LBO valuation.

Modeling exercises will address common pitfalls and the status of changing accounting treatments, and typical adjustments required for arriving at pro forma financial projections.

Attendees can opt to register for one or both days of the training.  It's your choice!

    1/23/2014 12:00 PM1/23/2014 1:30 PM0Downtown Luncheon:  Frontier Markets
    Alternative InvestmentsSociety, Educational

The case for frontier equity markets rests on four pillars: history, globalization, diversification and optimism.

If the world is becoming a better place, then conditions in frontier countries will continue to improve. We believe this improvement will be gradual rather than dramatic, measured by years and decades. Over time, it will lead both to better living conditions and to rewarding investment opportunities.

Our speaker, Larry Speidell, CFA, is founding Partner and  Chief Investment Officer of Frontier Market Asset  Management LLC, an independent investment management firm focused on equity investments in frontier markets such as Botswana, Ghana, Kenya, Cote d'Ivoire, Qatar, Bangladesh and Kazakhstan.

Larry explains his investment philosophy in this way:  "With an emphasis on analysis, endurance and patience, we believe investing in frontier markets is likely to prove rewarding. These markets are inefficient; they have few CFA charterholders, and our analyses are often breaking new ground. Travel in frontier markets can be grueling, but we try to be philosophical when we need to endure the hardships encountered along the way. Patience is required in trading and holding frontier stocks in order to realize their long term potential."

    Thursday February 20th, 2014

    12:00 PM - 1:30 PM

Commodities, whether they are related to food, energy or metals, are an important part of everyday life. Similarly, commodities can be an important way for investors todiversify beyond traditional stocks and bonds, or to profit from a conviction about price movements.

It used to be that investors avoided commodities because doing so required significant amounts of time, money and expertise. Today, there are a number of different routes to the commodity markets for investors.

Join us as a panel of experts from Morgan Stanley and other firms debate the strategies of commodities investing.  The professionals will discuss:

    • The role of commodities in a portfolio - diversification tool and a hedge for inflation;
    • Understanding the importance of the structure of a commodities investment;
    • The differences among the major benchmarks;
    • Investing in commodity futures vs. commodity-related equities.
    (Panelists to be announced)
