CIO Investment Leadership Series Featuring Endowments

The fourth installment of CFA Society Los Angeles' CIO Investment Leadership Series will feature Chief Investment Officers from leading Endowments to discuss how they are turning disruption into opportunity to provide for their constituents. These expert investors will discuss a range of topics including:
  • The current opportunities and challenges in the market and how to optimize portfolio positioning accordingly.
  • Innovative approaches to balancing income, growth, diversification, and capital protection.
  • The strategies used to meet their investment targets for their constituents while promoting societal advancement.
  • The importance of diversity and social responsibility as it relates to generating superior performance.
  • How to identify and onboard the best existing and emerging fund managers.
  • Best practices in endowment management in a “Constant COVID” environment.


MODERATOR

Alicia Romo, CFA | Alicia Romo is     the Managing Director and head of Investments and Short Term Funding for MUFG Union Bank, located in Los Angeles. Alicia manages the team that oversees all aspects of the bank’s investment portfolio including investment strategy, liquidity, capital, and regulatory requirements. She also supervises the short-term funding requirements of the bank.

Prior to joining MUFG Union Bank, Alicia was a Senior Manager at Deloitte & Touche, LLP where she was an SME in structured finance and interest rate risk management. Alicia consulted nationally for investment portfolio management, securitization structures and in front-office and back-office securitization and derivative operations. She was a regular speaker at national MBA and securitization conferences.

Alicia is on the board for Monte Vista Grove Homes, a leading senior independent living, convalescent care and dementia care facility in Pasadena. She is also currently serving as the President on the CFA Society Los Angeles Board of Governors and is a CFALA Review Coordinator for Level I. She was awarded her Chartered Financial Analyst designation in 1999. Back To Top ^^

PANELISTS

Justin Barton, CFA | Justin Barton is President and Chief Investment Officer at the UCLA Investment Company. The Investment Company is responsible for the UCLA Foundation endowment, a global, multi-asset portfolio. Along with the Investment Company team, Mr. Barton oversees all aspects of the endowment including executing investment strategy, portfolio construction, and governance.

Mr. Barton began his investment career in Brown University’s investment office before joining Old Square Capital, a New York-based investment firm. He moved to London in 2011, where he worked for Investec Asset Management, an institutional investment manager. Mr. Barton has a BA degree from Princeton University and an MA in International Relations from the University of Cape Town. Mr. Barton holds an Investment Management Certificate from the CFA Society of the UK and the Chartered Financial Analyst® designation. 

Craig D. Crow | Craig D. Crow joined Trinity University as its inaugural Director of Investments in 2017 and is responsible for overseeing Trinity’s $1.5bn investment portfolio, aided by Trinity’s Investment Committee. Prior to joining Trinity, Craig worked at Rice Management Company where he was a generalist investment professional for Rice's $5.3bn endowment and responsible for research, analysis, and monitoring across an extensive range of asset classes and Rice's portfolio of investments. Previously, he was an Investment Associate in J.P. Morgan's Asset Management division, where he advised family offices on investment management decisions, including asset allocation, manager selection, and opportunistic investments. Prior to J.P. Morgan, he worked in Corporate Development for Miner Holding Co., a portfolio of privately held industrial service companies, where he led value-creation efforts through strategic investment pursuits. Post-college, Craig started his career playing professional baseball in the Texas Rangers Organization and was drafted in the 11th round of the 2006 MLB First Year Player's Draft. He is a CFA® charterholder, holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Rice University, with dual majors in Economics and English, and was an all‐conference pitcher for the Owls baseball team.

Charmel Maynard | Charmel Maynard currently serves as Associate Vice President, Chief Investment Officer, and University treasurer of the University of Miami. In this capacity, he leads the University’s efforts to invest over $3B in assets, including endowment and pension funds. Mr. Maynard is also responsible for the University’s ~$2B capital structure, including liquidity and debt issuances. Additionally, he manages treasury and cash management.

Mr. Maynard was previously a vice president with J.P. Morgan’s Investment Bank in New York City. During his 10-year career with J.P. Morgan, he focused on investment banking debt capital markets and leveraged finance, where he advised clients on capital structure solutions, deal structuring, and execution of syndicated revolving credit facilities, institutional term loans, and bond issuances.

He currently serves on the Mead Art Museum board as the chair of the Budget Committee, Catalyst Miami Board of Directors (Finance Committee), Knight Foundation Community Advisory Board and Black Angels Miami Board.

Mr. Maynard holds a Bachelor of Arts in political science from Amherst College.
