 Member Requirements


  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent education/work/experience
  • Passing score on CFA Level I exam or the self-administered Standards of Practice Exam
  • 4000 hours of professional work experience in investment decision-making
  • Submission of a Member’s Agreement and a Professional Conduct Statement to CFA Institute
  • 3 professional references (or 2 if one is a regular member of the society in which you are applying to)​

Retired Member Requirements


  • Be an active CFA Institute member for at least 5 years
  • To ensure members receive the 70+ age benefit, members are encouraged to update their CFA Institute profile with the correct date of birth.​​​

 Affiliate Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent education/work/experience
  • 12 months of relevant work experience
  • Fulfill such other requirements as the Society may impose consistent with requirements established by CFA Institute
  • Be accepted by CFA Institute as an Affiliate Member
  • Submission of the CFA Institute Member's Agreement, the CFA Institute Professional Conduct Statement, and any additional documentation requested by CFA Institute
  • 3 professional references (or 2 if one is a regular member of the society in which you are applying to)​​​

 Candidate Requirements


  • ​Currently registered as a Level I, Level II, or Level III candidate in the CFA Program. 
  • No CFA Institute sanctions for professional misconduct. 
  •  Adhere to all policies set forth in the Candidate Responsibility Statement signed when entering the CFA Program. 
  • Candidate membership is valid for one year and must be renewed annually. 
  • CFASSD’s Candidate membership year runs in a 12-month cycle. The membership year will run July 1st to June 30th. 
  • CFASSD Candidate dues are $50 annually and are not prorated. 
  • Must join as a regular member upon passing the Level III exam.
  • Candidate membership is only available to individuals who do not qualify as Regular or Affiliate members (please see sandiego.cfasociety.org and go to Membership --> Join or Renew for more information). 

 Student Requirements


  • CFASSD's Student Membership is available to those who are matriculating toward a bachelor's or master's degree in finance, business, accounting, economics, or other courses of study related to the investment decision-making process.
  • Student membership is valid for one year and must be renewed annually.
  • CFASSD's student membership year runs in a 12-month cycle. The membership year will run July 1st to June 30th.
  • CFASSD student dues are $50 annually and are not prorated.
  • Individuals may maintain student membership status for one year after graduation or until the end of the membership year in which the student discontinues his/her studies toward a degree in business or finance.
  • Student membership is only available to individuals who do not qualify as Regular or Affiliate members (please see sandiego.cfasociety.org and go to Membership - Join or Renew for more information).
