NEW EVENT! CFA Society Seattle is offering its members a way to enjoy networking, cocktails, and stimulating conversations, all from the comfort of home! Let's take a break from reading Coronavirus news to focus on a book that uses facts to demonstrate that, for all of its imperfections, the world is actually in a much better state than we might think.
With COVID-19, fake news, and election year jockeying to bombard our consciousness, wouldn't it be great to have the stress reducing habit of only having opinions for which there are strong supporting facts? Join us as we discuss Factfulness, by the late Hans Rosling, as our first virtual book club selection. Hans researched and published the book collaboratively with his son Ola and daughter in-law Anna. The book seeks to address 10 instincts that distort our perspective, and illustrates these distortions through a positive world view supported by … facts. Bill Gates gave a free download of this book to every student graduating from a US college in 2018. Unfortunately Hans Rosling died of pancreatic cancer before the book was published, but his spirit lives on through a fantastic website (gapminder.org), that is full of information which will make all of us feel a bit better about the world. This book is also the current Bloomberg Book Club selection.
Books will be read over a period of six weeks, with fortnightly discussions over Zoom. Optional cocktail recipes will be provided for each meeting, with some connection to the book. The dress code is Zoomwear (you can decide what that means for yourself). Chosen books will have some relevance to current events.
Please sign up for the Book Club on the website; we will be sending additional details in the days leading up to the event.
