Active ownership, or stewardship, is a key component of ESG and responsible investment. By engaging with portfolio companies and exercising voting rights over ESG issues, asset managers can play a unique role in driving the transition to a sustainable, low-carbon global economy and in achieving outcomes such as the Paris Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals. Accordingly, the Principles for Responsible Investment highlight that active ownership is highly effective for reducing risk exposure and maximizing portfolio value.
Major asset owners globally and in Asia, including Japan’s Government Pension Investment Fund, increasingly expect their asset managers to have significant capacity and a track record of engagement on not just governance, but environmental and social issues like climate change, deforestation, and water risk. Further, guidance in the Singapore Stewardship Principles and its global and regional equivalents specify active ownership as a key facet of being a responsible owner.
Join this lunch masterclass to understand Robeco’s rationale and approach to active ownership, hear about lessons they have learned through engaging portfolio companies on ESG issues, and learn how engagement can unlock your own portfolio’s value and enhance your competitiveness.
The session will showcase newly published WWF research on Southeast Asian banks’ ESG policies and highlight its utility for supporting investor engagement with portfolio banks, followed by relevant case studies from Robeco.
