Charter Award Ceremony and A Forensic Accounting Framework for Detecting Accounting Problems

Join us on Tuesday, November 13 for a special evening with Thomas R. Robinson, PhD, CFA, of CFA Institute. Dr. Robinson's presentation, A Forensic Accounting Framework for Detecting Accounting Problems, will discuss the warning signs and red flags of accounting games played by companies, with global case studies. He will present typical accounting games played by companies, using real company examples, and how many of the problems can be detected by understanding how the financial statements fit together.
The presentation will include:
- How financial statements “articulate” or fit together
- Typical accounting games played by companies with global (and a few South Florida) examples but an emphasis on recent Asia-Pacific cases
- A framework for examining a company for potential problems
- Warning signs and red flags to look for
Before dinner, Tom will present CFA charters to new charter recipients and give a brief presentation about the CFA Charter and its increasing global footprint and importance.

Tom is managing director of education at CFA Institute. Tom leads and develops teams responsible for the production and delivery of educational content and examinations for investment professionals - encompassing the CFA Program, CIPM Program, Claritas Investment Certificate, Lifelong Learning, Private Wealth, Publications (such as the Financial Analysts Journal), Conferences and Executive Education. He joined CFA Institute in 2007 from the University of Miami where he was an associate professor of accounting and director of the Master of Professional Accounting and Financial Planning Programs. Concurrent with his academic career he served as managing director of a private wealth investment advisory firm, served as a consultant in valuation & financial analysis and created continuing education programs for financial professionals. Previously, he worked in public accounting at the management level overseeing and performing tax/financial planning services. Tom has authored or co-authored several books related to financial analysis, valuation and wealth management and numerous journal articles. He holds a bachelor’s in economics from the University of Pennsylvania and a master's and PhD from Case Western Reserve University. Dr. Robinson is a Certified Public Accountant (Ohio), Certified Financial Planner®, CFA charterholder and CAIA charterholder.
