About the conference:

 

There are more than 3.000 insurance companies in Europe. Their activities vary significantly, ranging from medical malpractice liability insurance to non-standard motor or even pet insurance. But what is exactly an insurance company? How is it different from a bank, from an investment risk perspective ? Why do insurers seeks financing through financial markets, although, at first sight, they do not need cash? Why has it become so popular among insurance companies to issue debt? And finally, from an investor’s perspective, what are the pros and cons of investing in insurance debt? Is it risky? Can some events affect the entire industry? 

 

About the speaker:

PAU VERNHES

Paul Vernhes is the Chief Executive Officer of Cohen & Company Financial (Europe) S.A., Cohen & Company, LLC’s wholly-owned French subsidiary. He has 30 years of insurance related experience. Mr. Vernhes has been with Cohen & Company since 2005 and has been responsible for the insurance credit analysis for the Dekania Europe and the PriDe investment vehicles. From January 2004 to April 2005, Mr. Vernhes was the Chief Financial Officer of Corifrance, the French reinsurance subsidiary of Markel Corp. Prior to and in addition to his role as Chief Financial Officer, Mr. Vernhes served as a treaty and facultative reinsurance underwriter for Corifrance in Europe and Latin America. Previously, Mr. Vernhes served as a strategy and management consultant to the insurance industry at A.T. Kearney and Deloitte & Touche Consulting Group. He also served as a second lieutenant in a French paratroop regiment during his military service. Mr. Vernhes is a graduate of the Ecole de Hautes Etudes Commerciales (HEC) and holds a M.Sc. in Finance from the London School of Economics.
