On January 27th, 2016, the CFA Society Stamford hosted a packed house for the Annual Forecast Dinner at the Greenwich Country Club. We would like to thank our sponsors; the CFA Institute, CreditSights, First Trust, PowerShares, OppenheimerFunds, VOYA and Deutsche Bank. We would not have had such a phenomenal event without your support!

Panelists and Presenters

Kurt Schacht, JD, CFA – presented the Global Market Sentiment Survey conducted by CFA Institute (CFAI)

Paul Smith, CFA – CFAI President and CEO, updated members on CFAIs policies and goals

Pimm Fox – Bloomberg Radio, panel moderator

Tony Crescenzi, EVP – PIMCO (panelist)

Glen Reynolds, CEO – CreditSights (panelist)

Alec Young, Investment Strategist – OppenheimerFunds (panelist)

Paul Zemsky, CFA, CIO – VOYA (panelist)

Highlights

Kurt Schacht discussed CFA Institute's Global Market Sentiment Survey.  According to the survey, 1/3 of the respondents expect a financial crisis in the next 3 years. A general consensus by the panel was that the odds of a recession were currently low due to low jobless claims, generally healthier banks, and no sign of forestalled purchases by banks and individuals. Some discussion was had over the uncertainty of the Chinese economy. Longer term interest rates in the US were expected to remain low for the rest of the decade. There was general concern from the panel about the unintended consequences of regulations as represented by diminished liquidity in certain market.

Thank you to all who attended, helping to make the event a great success with such a huge turn out!

On Tuesday, November 10th, TOBAM hosted "Maximum Diversification Portfolios:  Exploring the Anti Benchmark Approach" at the Stamford Innovation Center.  TOBAM, which is an acronym for Think Outside the Box Asset Management, was awarded a US patent in 2011 for its Anti-Benchmark methodology.  Throughout the presentation and the Q&A session TOBAM elaborated on their strategy of capturing the full Equity Risk Premium while avoiding the biases inherent in all index constructions (weighting factors of sectors, individual name risk, and correlations within indices).  The Anti-Benchmark portfolio's goal is to minimize stock specific risk and is the "most protected versus its own mistakes" as the portfolio represents a portfolio of stocks with the lowest correlations to themselves.  Using a given benchmark universe (i.e. MSCI World, NASDAQ 100, MSCI Emerging Market) TOBAM seeks to create the Most Diversified Portfolio, which is a group of assets that essentially can not be diversified further with the addition of another asset from the benchmark universe or further variation in the groups components.  The long term out-performance versus the benchmark group in published work has been significant.

The CFA Society Stamford hosted Michael A. Gayed, CFA, at the Stamford Innovation Center on Tuesday September 22, 2015.  In a lively presentation interspersed with humorous asides Mr. Gayed reprised his published works on predicting volatility and corrections, co-authored by Charlie Bilello, CMT.  The signal power of long term Treasuries and the asset classes lumber versus gold were discussed, in addition to the original analysis on the utility sector, compared to market performance since 1926.

Investment strategies using signals generated from the utility sector historically have shown significant outperformance relative to the market.  These strategies have also exhibited the ability to avoid the periods of highest market volatility as defined by the top 1% of VIX values.  Mr. Gayed and Mr. Bilello's papers and presentations can be accessed via the CFAI website Publications and Multimedia section.

Join us for our Annual Dinner

Given the strength in US equity and credit markets throughout 2014, a big risk to investors is complacency heading into 2015. CFASS has secured a number of experts across asset classes and will host an entertaining evening moderated by Bloomberg’s Pimm Fox as he prompts our panelists to unveil key risks and opportunities in 2015.

Attendees will also enjoy the most recent Global Market Sentiment Survey presented by Kurt Schacht, Managing Director of the Standards and Financial Market Integrity Division of CFA Institute.

In addition to the various actionable investment themes discussed by the panelists, attendees are afforded the opportunity to network during the happy hour and enjoy a full course dinner at the Greenwich Country Club.

Thank you to our Sponsors!
