CFA Society Vancouver is hosting the 17th Annual Charter Awards Ceremony at the Fairmont Waterfront Hotel on February 6, 2020. This year's event will include a dinner and awards ceremony with the following guest speakers.
Margaret E. Franklin, CFA
Ms. Franklin is President and CEO of CFA Institute. Before joining CFA Institute, Margaret led International Wealth Management for North America and was president of BNY Mellon Wealth Management, Canada. Previously, she was president of Marret Private Wealth and served in senior positions at Barclays Global Investors, State Street Global Advisors, and Mercer. Ms. Franklin is the former chair of the Board of Governors of CFA Institute and a past president of the Toronto CFA Society. She received a bachelor's degree in economics from McMaster University.
Aaron Brown, CFA
Mr. Brown joined The City of Calgary in 2016 and took the role of Deputy City Treasurer in March 2018. As the head of Treasury, he has oversight of the $5 billion investment portfolio, all cash management, banking, and cashiering operations, corporate finance and PCI compliance. Prior to joining The City in 2016, Mr. Brown was the Director of Portfolio Management for Alberta Treasury Board & Finance, as well as previously holding roles at the University of Alberta and RBC Royal Bank.
Mr. Brown graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Alberta in 1997 and became a CFA charterholder in 2003. He currently serves on the Investment Advisory Committee for AUMA, The Calgary Parks Foundation Finance Committee as well as is a member of both CFA Society Calgary and CFA Society Edmonton.
In May 2018, Mr. Brown was elected by his peers in to serve a two year term as Chair of the CFA Institute's Presidents Council. In this global senior society leadership role he represents the 158 CFA societies around the world and their over 140,000 charterholders.
David Smith, CFA
Mr. Smith is the Managing Director and founding partner of Pinnacle Fund Services, a firm providing accounting and valuation services to hedge and private equity funds through North America. He is responsible for the delivery of fund administration services to Pinnacle clients, the development of Pinnacle's technology platform and operating systems and the strategic and business development of the company.
Mr. Smith is a Chartered Accountant, holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from Queen's University and holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation. He is the current chair of CFA Societies Canada and is the CFA Institute's Presidents Council Representative for Canada.
Mr. Smith is a past president of CFA Society Vancouver and was awarded the CFA Institute Volunteer of the Year award in 2017.
Michael Thom, CFA
Michael Thom, CFA is the Managing Director for CFA Societies Canada. He leads the strategic direction of CFA Societies Canada and advocates the highest standards of integrity and ethics for the ultimate benefit of Canadian investors, while building brand awareness of the CFA designation. Mr. Thom comes to CFA Societies Canada with over 12 years of experience in a variety of capital markets positions. His most recent role was as an executive at a Toronto-based hedge fund manager. Previously his career was focused in equity trading and portfolio management at firms in Toronto and Vancouver. Mr. Thom brings many years of volunteer leadership experience in advocacy in this role. He has served as a director of CFA Society Toronto's board, has volunteered in multiple capacities for CFA Institute, and as a member and former chair of the Canadian Advocacy Council. Mr. Thom is a graduate of the University of British Columbia and is a CFA charterholder.
Michael Job, CFA
Mr. Job joined Leith Wheeler in September 2007 after graduating from Dalhousie University with a Bachelor of Commerce degree. While at Dalhousie, he majored in finance and completed co-op placements in equity research and investment banking at a major Canadian bank. At Leith Wheeler, Mr. Job is responsible for managing both Private and Institutional clients, including Foundations and First Nations. He currently serves as President on the CFA Society Vancouver Board of Directors and holds a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation.
Tim Wilkinson, CFA
Mr. Wilkinson is a Senior Analyst/Trader and a Principal at Connor Clark and Lunn Investment Management Ltd. He works on the fixed income team spending the majority of his time on trade execution and risk management. Prior to his current role at the firm, he spent a number of years as a senior analyst on the business analytics team within the Connor Clark and Lunn Financial Group. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Victoria and became a CFA Charterholder in 2007.
