CFA Society Vancouver is hosting the 16th Annual Charter Awards Ceremony at the Terminal City Club on February 7, 2018 This year's event will include a cocktail reception and awards ceremony with the following guest speakers.
Heather Brilliant, CFA
Ms. Brilliant, CFA, is the Managing Director, Americas and acting Chief Operating Officer at First State Investments. Heather is responsible for managing the business in the Americas and further expanding First State Investment's market presence across the region. As acting COO, she also provides strategic leadership and oversight to the firm's global operations, technology, and project management teams. She is a member of the firm's Global Executive Committee.
Ms. Brilliant has worked in the industry for over 20 years. Prior to joining First State Investments in 2017, she spent 14 years at Morningstar most recently as Chief Executive Officer of Morningstar Australasia. In this role, Ms. Brilliant devised and drove various initiatives based on functional and local market priorities, including the development and implementation of a 10-year strategy to accelerate business growth. Preceding this, she led the equity and corporate credit research teams at Morningstar, consisting of more than 100 analysts based in offices around the world.
Previously, Ms. Brilliant spent several years as an equity research analyst for Coghill Capital Management and Driehaus Capital Management. She has covered a variety of sectors, including pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, business services, and retail. She started her finance career at Bank of America as a corporate finance analyst covering the auto industry.
Ms. Brilliant holds a bachelor's degree in economics from Northwestern University and a master's degree in business administration from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. She also holds the Chartered Financial Analyst® designation and is chairman of the CFA Institute Board of Governors and past chair of the CFA Society of Chicago.
Aaron Brown, CFA
Mr. Brown joined The City of Calgary in 2016 and took the role of Deputy City Treasurer in March 2018. As the head of Treasury, he has oversight of the $5 billion investment portfolio, all cash management, banking, and cashiering operations, corporate finance and PCI compliance. Prior to joining The City in 2016, Mr. Brown was the Director of Portfolio Management for Alberta Treasury Board & Finance, as well as previously holding roles at the University of Alberta and RBC Royal Bank.
Mr. Brown graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Alberta in 1997 and became a CFA charterholder in 2003. He currently serves on the Investment Advisory Committee for AUMA, The Calgary Parks Foundation Finance Committee as well as is a member of both CFA Society Calgary and CFA Society Edmonton.
In May 2018, Mr. Brown was elected by his peers in to serve a two year term as Chair of the CFA Institute's Presidents Council. In this global senior society leadership role he represents the 152 CFA societies around the world and their over 120,000 charterholders.
David Smith, CFA
Mr. Smith is the Managing Director and founding partner of Pinnacle Fund Services, a firm providing accounting and valuation services to hedge and private equity funds through North America. He is responsible for the delivery of fund administration services to Pinnacle clients, the development of Pinnacle's technology platform and operating systems and the strategic and business development of the company.
Mr. Smith is a Chartered Accountant, holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from Queen's University and holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation. He is the current chair of CFA Societies Canada and is the CFA Institute's Presidents Council Representative for Canada.
Mr. Smith is a past president of CFA Society Vancouver and was awarded the CFA Institute Volunteer of the Year award in 2017. He is also the Treasurer of Christ Church Cathedral.
Jessie Bobinski, CFA
Ms. Bobinski joined Dixon Mitchell in 2013 as a Private Client Portfolio Manager, responsible for designing and managing investment portfolios for high net worth individuals, families, foundations, and trusts on a discretionary basis. She became a partner of the firm in 2015 and is a member of its Investment Committee. Ms. Bobinski also takes a leadership role with Dixon Mitchell's team of associate portfolio managers, coordinating training and development, while helping to instill the firm's approach to client service and asset management.
Ms. Bobinski brings significant experience to her practice, having started her wealth management career in 2000 at Phillips, Hager & North where she spent eight years assisting clients in both a non-discretionary and discretionary capacity. In the five years immediately prior to joining Dixon Mitchell, she managed discretionary investment portfolios for physicians and their families with MD Private Investment Counsel.
Outside of the office, Ms. Bobinski is President and Chair of CFA Society of Vancouver and an active volunteer with Junior Achievement. She is a graduate of the BCIT Financial Management program, a CFA Charterholder, and a Certified Financial Planner (CFP).
