This seminar will provide an understanding of the fundamental concepts of AI and the impact of what is often called the "Third Wave" in investment management and finance.

Topics include:

  • What is Artificial Intelligence and how has it the use of AI in investment management evolved over the years?
  • How will AI disrupt finance and where will it come from?
  • How is the industry using Big Data?
  • How do professionals separate the hype from reality? A close look at some real-world examples that are creating an investment "edge"
  • Will AI threaten human portfolio managers and analysts? Should CFA charter holders fear that "robots" will take over their jobs?
  • What opportunities are there for asset owners to gain from these evolving applications?
  • What does the next wave of alternative investment managers look like and where will they come from?

 Learning Objective:

  1. Bring awareness of the current and potential future application of Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence techniques in the field of finance
  2. Bring knowledge to CFA candidates as Big Data and Artificial Intelligence topics slated to be included in the CFA examination
  3. Give analysts information that they use to improve their investment management process and workflow
  4. Give asset owners an understanding of how they may invest in managers that are gaining an edge in using AI
  5. Give professionals a grasp on how AI may impact jobs and organizations 
President and Chief Investment Officer, MOV37 and Protégé Partners

Adil Abdulali is President and Chief Science Officer of MOV37 and Protégé Partners. Adil has 27 years of experience in the financial markets. For the past 15 years Adil has been sourcing, investing and managing alternative investments in emerging managers. He is developing new metrics and visualization tools to evaluate Autonomous Learning Investment Strategies that bring together data, data science, machine learning, blockchain with cheap available computing power. He joined Protégé in 2003 shortly after its inception as head of risk and developed the systems and analytics to manage early stage investing risks. Adil used geometry to invent the Bias Ratio, a metric that detects return smoothing by active managers.

Dr. Jim Kyung-Soo Liew is an Associate Professor of Finance at Johns Hopkins Carey Business School and revels in pushing the boundaries of financial knowledge and product development both as an academic and FinTech entrepreneur. He has published pioneering research in the intersection of social media big data, blockchain, and financial markets.

He currently teaches "Big Data Machine Learning AI," "Crypto-Currencies and Blockchain,” “Advanced Hedge Fund Strategies," and "Leading Entrepreneurship and Innovation" at the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School. Additionally, he serves as the Chairman of the Johns Hopkins Innovation Factory and has received the Dean’s Award for Faculty Excellence 2015-2019. He serves on the Editorial Board of The Journal of the British Blockchain Association, Journal of Alternative Investments and the Journal of Portfolio Management where he co-authored the most read Invited Editorial "iGDP?".

Jose is a proven leader in the field of quantitative trading with over 20 years of experience on both the buy and sell sides. Most recently he was the Head of Trading at Bridgewater Associates, where he was responsible for global trading and trading technology across all products and asset classes. Prior to that, Jose was Global Head of Electronic Trading for Deutsche Bank, where he built a powerful alpha-driven algorithmic trading business. During the first 10 years of his career, Jose developed and managed a number of statistical arbitrage strategies at Paloma Partners, Hull/Goldman Sachs, and Credit Suisse. Jose holds a PhD in Experimental High Energy Physics from the University of California.

Julia advises a broad spectrum of investor types, from asset owners to asset managers (hedge and traditional) in adopting or refining the use of quantitative techniques in their investment and risk management process. She is also responsible for several of her client's strategic initiatives, including the development of capabilities related to ESG integration.
