Is it a currency? Is it a commodity? Does it contain an embedded store of value? Who is really controlling it? There are many questions floating around about cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, Ethereum and Litecoin as well as the platforms where they trade. As the public has experienced FOMO (fear of missing out) from observing the 602,500% increase in Bitcoin’s value over the 13 years it has existed, questions of efficacy have made it out of hacker chat rooms and into your mother’s kitchen. Come hear a balanced perspective from two speakers on the potential benefits and risks of cryptocurrencies. We hope you walk away with both a deeper institutional understanding of “crypto” that can be applied to your practice and a stock of retail soundbytes to satiate even the least sophisticated investors in your circle.

Alex Pickard is responsible for conducting research and writing to support Research Affiliates’ publications. Since joining the firm, he has contributed a number of research insights on market impact trading costs, mutual fund expected returns, and factor timing. Additionally, Alex has assisted with the development and implementation of the firm’s systematic trading strategies.

Alex received a BS in mechanical engineering from the University of Texas, Austin, and a Master of Financial Engineering from the UCLA Anderson School of Management. He holds the Chartered Financial Analyst® designation and is a member of CFA Institute and CFA Society Orange County.

Management Managing Partner, Morgan Creek Digital Assets 
Mark Yusko is the Founder, CEO and Chief Investment Officer of Morgan Creek Capital Management. He is also the Managing Partner of Morgan Creek Digital Assets. Morgan Creek Capital Management was founded in 2004 and currently manages close to $2 billion in discretionary and non‐discretionary assets. Prior to founding Morgan Creek, Mr. Yusko was CIO and Founder of UNC Management Company (UNCMC), the Endowment investment office for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  Before that, he was Senior Investment Director for the University of Notre Dame Investment Office.

Mr. Olds has over fifteen years of experience in the investment industry and over twenty years of experience in the financial services industry. He was previously a portfolio manager at Johnston Lemon Asset Management. Mr. Olds is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania with a Bachelor of Arts in economics and a minor in mathematics. He is a Chartered Financial Analyst and a member of the CFA Society of Washington, D.C. Mr. Olds was born and raised in Portland, Oregon, but has resided in the Washington D.C. metro area since 2005.

Cancellations and Refund Requests
  • Cancelations must be made in writing and emailed to on or before 5 business days prior to the event
  • No refunds will be processed after 5 pm ET, 5 business days prior to the event.
  • A $25 administrative fee will be applied to all cancellations.
  • Refunds will not be issued for no shows.
