Already a member of CFA Institute?
Current CFA Institute members should apply through the Institute for corresponding Society categories of membership (Regular, Affiliate, or Retired)

Are you a member of another society but want to change your affiliation to CFAW?
You can change your member society affiliation in your online account at the CFA Institute. Note: Member society dues are non-transferable and non-refundable. You can be a member of more than one society.

Currently enrolled in the CFA Program or a graduate student?
The Student/Candidate membership may be the best Society membership category for you.

Not in the CFA Program but would like to apply for CFAW membership?
Guests, unaffiliated with the CFA Program, are welcome to join and take advantage of our many events.

 

Regular Members ($110 per year)
This membership type is required for CFA charterholders and recommended for non-charterholding, experienced investment professionals and seasoned academics.  Regular members of CFAW have the right to hold office on the Board of Directors, act as a sponsor for membership and to vote for board members as part of the annual proxy.

Qualifications for regular membership:

  • Hold a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution or have equivalent work experience
  • Passed Level I of the CFA® exam or passed CFA Institute's Self-Administered Standards of Practice Examination.  Click here to access the exam 
  • Have 48 months of acceptable professional work experience in the investment decision-making process
  • Submit professional references. Click here to view the reference requirements
  • Agree to adhere to and sign the Member's Agreement, a Professional Conduct Statement, and any additional documentation requested by CFA Institute

     Annual dues for a Regular member of CFAW are $110. The membership year runs July 1 to June 30.

Affiliate Members ($110 per year)
This membership type is recommended for CFA candidates who do not have sufficient work experience to become Regular members. Affiliate membership is also suitable for non-charterholding professionals and academics in the early stage of their careers who would like to join BOTH the Washington, DC Society AND the CFA Institute. 

Qualifications for affiliate membership:

  • Passed Level I of the CFA® exam or passed CFA Institute's Self-Administered Standards of Practice Examination.  Click here to access the exam
  • Have 12 months of acceptable professional work experience
  • Agree to adhere to and sign the Member's Agreement, a Professional Conduct Statement, and any additional documentation requested by CFA Institute
  • Submit two reference forms. Click to view the reference requirements

    Once an applicant is approved for Affiliate membership by CFAW, the applicant will automatically become an Affiliate member of CFA Institute. CFAW Affiliate members receive the same benefits as Regular members of CFAW, except the right to vote. 

    Annual dues for an Affiliate member of CFAW are $110. The membership year runs July 1 to June 30.

Retired Members ($40 per year)
Open to individuals who have been a Regular or Affiliate Member of the CFA Institute for at least five years but no longer are an active Regular Member or Affiliate Member of the CFA Institute. These individuals can no longer be substantially engaged in the professional practice of financial analysis, investment management, securities analysis, or other similar profession for compensation.

Guest Members ($110 per year)
Open to anyone not eligible for any other membership category who is interested in receiving notifications of and participating in CFAW events. No professional references or sponsors are required. Currently

Student/Candidate Members ($50 per year)
Open to current CFA Candidates, as well as, to students currently enrolled in a Graduate program in finance or economics at an accredited university in the greater Washington, DC area. No professional references or sponsors are required.
