Event Description

The discussion will cover the macro economic importance of and obstacles to growing the domestic labor force.  Fifth Third’s work has concluded that three social ills have been present in the current cycle and depressed labor force participation to a degree never before seen in modern American economic history: long-term unemployment, the opioid epidemic, and the incarceration/recidivism cycle.  Fortunately, it is possible to bring marginalized populations into the workforce.   Fifth Third’s observations of pioneering for-profit business owners have led them to develop a model of a “second-chance society” that could provide a productive path forward.  Finally, Mr. Korzenik will contrast the challenges of implementing this model against the costs of inaction.
