On 28th of November 2024 the CFA Society Liechtenstein was happy to host the 56th After Work Lecture at the University of Liechtenstein. This event brought together professionals from the Liechtenstein and Swiss financial industries, as well as students from the University of Liechtenstein, for an evening of learning and networking.
At the 56th After Work Lecture, we dived into the complex world of Catastrophe Bonds (Cat Bonds), and the impact Hurricane Milton had on the asset class. The session offered attendees a thorough understanding of the mechanics of Cat Bonds, their historical performance, and how events like Hurricane Milton can influence both the asset class and broader financial markets.
We were honored to have Florian Steiger, an expert from Icosa Investments AG, as our speaker for the evening. Florian provided a comprehensive overview of Cat Bonds, covering key topics such as:
- What Cat Bonds are and how they work
- The risk-return profile of Cat Bonds as an asset class
- A historical look at returns and a comparison with other asset classes
- The historical impact of certain trigger events
Florian then went on to explain the impact of the recent Hurricane Milton, providing valuable insights, as well as a scenario analysis conducted by Icosa Investments AG. This analysis explored different paths the hurricane could have taken, the respective damage it could have caused, and the potential financial impact.
Beyond the lecture, the event also served as a wonderful networking opportunity. It was exciting to see professionals from both the Swiss and Liechtenstein financial industries and students from the University of Liechtenstein connecting and exchanging ideas. The relaxed yet stimulating atmosphere fostered meaningful conversations, with participants exploring the implications of financial innovations in the context of disaster risk management.
Thanks to everyone who joined us for this event! Your participation and support make these events possible, and together, we are continuing to build a well-informed and connected community.
We are already looking forward to our next events in 2025, where we will continue to offer opportunities for learning, networking, and growth. Stay tuned for more details as we prepare for another exciting evening, and follow us on LinkedIn to be the first to know about it.
