MEET OUR LOCAL STUDENTS

It’s time for our Florida Gulf Coast University Student Spotlight! Our goal is to highlight young women who are ready to make a career in Investment Management.

This month's spotlight is Lily Hobson. Lily is an Economics and Finance double major and is set to graduate in May 2024. She is originally from Grand Blanc, Michigan but she has lived in the SWFL area for the past 8 years. Lily is interested in future job opportunities in Wealth Management or Economics. She can be reached at [email protected] or 810-877-0949.

Why did you choose FGCU and your major?
I chose FGCU first for its proximity to my home in Cape Coral and also because I loved the modern look of the campus. I originally was just an Econ major – those concepts really clicked with me. Going through the Economics classes I was introduced to the finance side and decided to add that as a double major.

What is/was your favorite class at FGCU?
Going back to the basics business classes that all business majors have to take – I really enjoyed Principles of Micro Economics with Dr. Biehl, which at the time was online. I then was asked to be a student aide for that class when Dr. Biehl taught it in person in a later semester – that’s how much I enjoyed it! I also really enjoyed the Student Managed Investment Fund class – in that class the students research and manage a portfolio, using the tools available for investment selection. The class overall is a great hands-on learning tool for students that may want to go into the investing side of finance. I had the opportunity to research and present on Cisco for the benefit of the group.

Where have you interned in your field?
Currently I have a position as a Undergraduate Research Assistant at the Regional Economic Research Institute here on campus at FGCU. Here we do all kinds of economic research – we put out reports regularly and contracted work for local organizations in Southwest Florida. As a student, we are encouraged to find our own questions to research and create reporting around that.

What are your career goals after graduation?
I plan to pursue my CFP designation and possibly the CFA charter. I would like to work for a wealth management company, focusing on portfolio analysis and management.

What clubs and/or organizations are you involved in at FGCU?
I am a member of the Honors College – which is for students that performed at a high level in high school and were selected to be in the program. As an Honors College student, we take the learning a little bit further, such as more essays or deeper learning opportunities. In addition, I am also helping to manage our Bloomberg Lab, maintaining the lab itself and coordinating the student volunteers.

Give us one "Fun Fact" about yourself.
Right now I am training to run at 10k in January that will take place in Orlando. I aspire to someday run a marathon!
