Beyond the Expense Ratio: The Real Cost of Index Fund Investing

    Wed, Aug 26, 12:00 PM - 01:00 PM (PT)
For many advisors, indexing has become a default way to access the broad market, but the time has come to apply real scrutiny to this approach. For much of the past 50 years, index funds have been a net positive for investors, who have moved from expensive and concentrated conventional active strategies to a more diversified and low-cost option. As trillions of dollars have flown into index funds, though, their limitations have become more apparent.  Index funds may not be as passive or as low-cost as they appear. Their rigid trading—with the goal of minimizing tracking error (a common measure of performance deviation between a portfolio and a benchmark)—can create a performance drag that is not captured in fees and expenses. The science of investing has advanced, and institutional investors should demand better solutions to meet their needs. Rob Harvey, CFA ® will be presenting on our updated research quantifying the costs associated with indexing. REGISTER

BOOK CLUB: Abundance: How We Build a Better Future by bestselling authors Ezra Klein and Derek Thomp

    Tue, Sep 1, 06:00 PM - 07:00 PM (PT)
Join CFA Society Seattle’s next Virtual Book Club discussion on September 1, from 6-7pm,  as we explore Abundance: How We Build a Better Future  by bestselling authors Ezra Klein and Derek Thompson. In this timely and thought-provoking book, the authors examine why many of society’s biggest challenges—from housing affordability and infrastructure development to clean energy and innovation—persist despite decades of technological and economic progress. They argue for a new “politics of abundance” focused on building, problem-solving, and creating the conditions for broad-based prosperity.  For investment professionals, Abundance  offers a compelling lens on the intersection of public policy, economic growth, productivity, innovation, and the long-term forces shaping markets and society. Whether you agree with the authors’ conclusions or not, the book provides plenty of material for a lively discussion. REGISTER

Join us for our in-person/virtual luncheon -- "Tax-Advantaged Equity Investments" -- on Wednesday, Sept. 2!   Tax equity investments represent a creative way to blend traditional infrastructure private equity with tax benefits while avoiding internal competition for capital allocation by matching investment volume to cash tax payments that otherwise go to the federal government. Full-time students can attend for free -- just select the "full-time student" ticket and use your school email address when registering.   The in-person luncheon will be held at Renaissance Des Moines Savery Hotel. Webinar: Valuing private assets in institutional portfolios

    Thu, Sep 3, 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM (BOT)
As private markets continue to grow, valuation has become one of the most consequential and contested parts of the investment process. For private equity investors, the hardest questions often arise when portfolio-company information is incomplete, market evidence is scarce, or valuations become stale. In those circumstances, the issue is not simply which model to use, but how to test assumptions, identify bias, and reach a valuation that can withstand investment committee scrutiny. In this live fireside chat, Rafaël Le Saux, CFA, brings more than 17 years of practical valuation experience across private markets to a conversation with host Azmi Özünlü, FRM, CFA, Senior Director, Content Development at CFA Institute. A Partner in PwC Luxembourg’s Valuation & Modelling practice, Rafaël will examine how investment committees assess portfolio-company valuations built on imperfect information, where bias enters the process, and how governance, standards, and technology can strengthen valuation decisions.

Parallax: Putting AI in the Heart of Your Investment Process.

    Thu, Sep 3, 06:00 PM - 09:00 PM (ID)
What does it actually take to put AI at the heart of a live investment process, and trust it with real capital?   CFA Society Indonesia invites you to an exclusive in-person session, "Parallax: Putting AI in the Heart of Your Investment Process." Drawing on Chicago Global's own production system, the session shows how a quantitative platform scores more than 65,000 securities across 48 markets every week, built on governed point-in-time data and run first on the firm's own capital. From raw fundamentals through to a client-ready research report, the language model does the writing but never makes the call.   Join Ivan Chelebiev, Co-Founder and CEO of Chicago Global, as he sets out where AI genuinely changes investment work and the discipline that keeps its output dependable: a validated factor model behind every prediction, deterministic rules on what may be said, and an audit trail behind every approved report. The session is designed for investment professionals, analysts, portfolio managers, and finance leaders who want a grounded, practical view of what AI in production looks like.   🗓️ Thursday, 03 September 2026 ⏰ 18:00 – 21:00 WIB 📍 Seasonal Taste, The Westin Hotel 51st Floor, Jl. HR. Rasuna Said, Jakarta   🎟️ Seats are limited. Secure your spot today: Fee: IDR. 150.000 Limited Seats

    Tue, Sep 8, 06:30 PM - 10:00 PM (CET)
As global markets continue to navigate heightened geopolitical uncertainty, shifting alliances, and persistent questions around fiscal sustainability, Europe finds itself at an important crossroads. While headlines often focus on challenges, the continent has also demonstrated remarkable resilience, supported by strong institutions, coordinated policy responses, and a robust financial architecture. To help our members better understand Europe's economic outlook, CFA Society Luxembourg is delighted to welcome Kalin Anev Janse , Chief Financial Officer and Member of the Management Board of the European Stability Mechanism (ESM). In this interactive discussion, Kalin will share his perspectives on Europe's fiscal strength, the resilience of the euro area, and the economic forces shaping European markets in the years ahead. Drawing on his experience at the ESM, the euro area's permanent crisis resolution mechanism, he will provide a unique insider's perspective on the policies, institutions, and financial safeguards that underpin Europe's stability in an increasingly uncertain world. The presentation will be followed by a networking cocktail.
