Inside the CFA Institute Research Challenge: Why It Matters
Each year, the CFA Institute runs one of the most practical learning experiences in finance—the Research Challenge.
It’s straightforward: students do the work of an equity analyst. And they’re judged by people who do that work every day.
What is the Research Challenge?
The Research Challenge is a global equity research competition where university teams:
- Analyze a publicly traded company
- Build a full research report
- Make a clear investment recommendation
- Present and defend their thesis to a panel of industry professionals
There’s no shortcut through it. The process mirrors real expectations—tight timelines, detailed analysis, and the ability to clearly communicate a point of view.
Teams advance through multiple rounds, from local competitions to sub-regionals, regionals, and ultimately the global finals.
Why It Matters to the Industry
This isn’t theoretical. Students are applying core investment skills—valuation, critical thinking, and communication—in a setting that closely reflects the job.
For firms and professionals involved as judges or mentors, it’s a direct look at emerging talent. You see how students think, how they defend a position, and how they handle pressure.
For CFA Society Colorado, it’s a way to stay closely connected to that pipeline while supporting the next generation of analysts in our local market.
2026 CFA Society Colorado Research Challenge
This year, CFA Society Colorado hosted the local competition, bringing together more than 20 students from universities across the region.
Each team presented a full report to a panel of investment professionals. The level of preparation was strong across the board—clear recommendations, thoughtful analysis, and well-structured presentations.
Just as important, the event created space for direct interaction between students and professionals. That feedback loop is where a lot of the value sits.
Congratulations to the team from the University of Denver for advancing from the Sub-Regional competition to the Americas Regional Semifinals in the 2026 CFA Institute Research Challenge.
Advancing at that level reflects more than technical ability. It shows clear thinking, strong communication, and the ability to defend a position under pressure.
We’re proud to see a Colorado team continue to move forward and represent our society with excellence!
