In a high profile local competition, Sunway University has won the country-level CFA Institute Research Challenge in Malaysia after going head to head in a battle of analytical wits with three other finalist teams. A local, regional, and global annual competition, CFA Institute's Research Challenge provides university students with hands-on mentoring and intensive training in financial analysis and research report-writing, with presentations conducted and judged in front of a panel of financial and investment experts.

"The financial industry is constantly looking for great talent and I believe that doing actual equity research and analysis goes beyond great academics alone. As such, the Research Challenge has been tremendous in helping expose students to real world industry experience with a global view. I hope this will inspire more students to look at the financial industry as a career path," said Teoh Kok Lin, industry advisor to the Sunway University team and Founder and CIO of Singular Asset Management.

Throughout Asia Pacific, more than 1,100 students from 280 universities participated in country-level contests. CFA Society Malaysia, holding the Research Challenge for the ninth year, fielded more than 55 students from 10 universities across the country. Sunway University now advances to the Asia Pacific regional Research Challenge competition and will compete against 100 students representing 24 teams, with one regional winner advancing to the global competition. The regional and global competitions will be held on 26-27 April 2016 in Kuala Lumpur. Worldwide, more than 5,000 students representing over 1,000 teams from universities in more than 80 countries have been part of the 2018 competition.

In acknowledgement to the winning team, Phua Yee Boon, organizing chair of the CFA Research Challenge for CFA Society Malaysia, said, "Congratulations to all student participants who have prepared and challenged themselves in this competition. On behalf of the many volunteers and academic advisors, it's been an exciting journey to nurture your interest in equity research and financial analysis. There are ample opportunities for future generations of investment professionals to contribute to a more sustainable, purposeful finance industry in Malaysia. Well done indeed!"

On behalf of the panel of judges, chief judge Geoffrey Ng shared that the 2018 contenders showed significant improvement in quality and knowledge base compared to previous competitions. He added that the winning team was well-rounded in terms of strong research, analytical, writing, and presentation skills. "Conviction is very important, especially in our industry, and it's a quality that made the winning team stand out from their contenders."

The winning team analyzed and presented an investment thesis on Westports Holdings Berhad to a panel of investment industry experts that included:

·        Geoffrey Ng, CFA, Director, Fortress Capital Asset Management;

·        Vince Ng, CFA, Senior Analyst, VCAM Asset Managers Sdn Bhd; and
