Generating Alpha: Predicting Volatility and Corrections
Please join us for lunch as we commence our 2017/2018 season with a presentation by Michael A. Gayed, CFA, of Pension Partners, LLC. Mr. Gayed co-authored two award-winning papers in 2014 that challenge the efficient market hypothesis by revealing market anomalies that have persisted over time. Attendees will gain strategic insight into intermarket relationships that challenge the efficient market hypothesis, the unique signaling power of Utilities and Treasuries, and active portfolio management strategies to manage risk and generate alpha.

Michael A. Gayed, CFA

As Chief Investment Strategist, Mr. Gayed helps to structure portfolios to best take advantage of various strategies designed to maximize the amount of time and capital spent in potentially outperforming investments. 

Prior to his current role, he served as Portfolio Manager for a large international investment group, trading long/short investment ideas. From 2004 - 2008, he was a Portfolio Strategist at AmeriCap Advisers, LLC.  As a member of the investment committee, he performed detailed analysis and helped to structure client portfolios. In 2007, Mr. Gayed launched his own long/short hedge fund, using various trading strategies focused on taking advantage of stock market anomalies. 

Mr. Gayed is an active contributor to popular financial websites and has been interviewed on national media, including CNBC and Bloomberg TV/Radio. An award winning author, Mr. Gayed is a sought after speaker discussing his research and unique approach to interpreting market movements. 

Mr. Gayed earned his B.S. from New York University, and is a CFA Charterholder.

Andrew D.W. Hill, CFA

Andrew ("Andy") D.W. Hill has more than 20 years of portfolio management experience in Investment Management. He is the President of Andrew Hill Investment Advisors, a boutique investment advisory firm that he co-founded with business partner Jennifer Figurelli in 2010. Over the past five years in business, the firm has grown to manage over $65 million in client assets while focusing on relationships between $400,000 to $4million.

Prior to forming his own firm, he was a Senior Portfolio Manager and regional Chief Investment Officer with two regional Trust banks. While at both institutions, Andy served in various nationwide investment strategy capacities including forming asset allocation recommendations and political research.

Andy holds an MBA from Syracuse University and a Bachelor of Science degree from Canisius College. He is a Chartered Financial Analyst and a Certified Public Accountant in New York State. He is a Past President of the Financial Analysts Society of Naples. Andy was also recently inducted into the Sigma Beta Delta International Honor Society. He wrapped up his first semester as an adjunct professor at Ave Maria during the Spring semester of 2016.

Andy is frequently interviewed by the media covering the financial markets. His comments are often mentioned in Investor's Business Daily, Naples Daily News, and Fort Myers News Press. He has also appeared on CNBC and FOX.

Andy was previously the Vice Chair of the Board of Directors for the Conservancy of Southwest Florida; Board of Directors of the Snook & Game Fish Foundation; Past President of the Estuary Conservation Association; Past President of the Naples Financial Analysts Society. He currently serves on the Hodges University President's Council and the Collier County Medical Society Foundation's Board of Trustees. Andy also sits on the regional council for the National Parks Conservation Association.

Andy is married to Dr. Susan M. Liberski and they have two German Shepherd dogs- "Apollo" and "Skipper". In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with his family, fishing on his boat and relaxing at his second home in Chokoloskee, Florida.


 Jennifer R. Figurelli

Jennifer R. Figurelli, CTFA, is responsible for the firm's various financial concierge capabilities. Having worked alongside Andy for over a decade at various bank trust companies, Jennifer co-founded Andrew Hill Investment Advisors, Inc. in January 2010 with the desire to offer high-touch and personalized financial planning services.

A native Floridian, Jennifer has lived in Naples since 1976. She is a Certified Trust and Financial Advisor (CTFA) and also serves as the firm's Chief Compliance Officer. Jennifer has over 18 years of experience in the trust administration field, having worked for several large trust companies in the Naples area. She has significant experience working with individuals who are undergoing transition, such as retirement, death of a spouse or loved one, divorce, college expense planning, and special needs situations.

Jennifer has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration from Florida Southern College and a Legal Assistants Certificate from Florida Atlantic University. She also is a graduate of the Florida Bankers Association Graduate Trust School and holds Life, Health and Variable Annuity designations. Figurelli is a licensed Investment Advisor Representative in the State of Florida (Series 65).

Jennifer is actively involved in her community and has volunteered in various capacities for The David Lawrence Foundation, Youth Haven, Habitat for Humanity, the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill of Collier County, and St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church.  Jennifer is a graduate of the Naples Chamber Leadership Collier Class of 2015.

Jennifer is married to Michael Figurelli and they have two children, Dante and Ginger and a Shih-Poo dog named "Popeye". In her spare time, Jennifer enjoys spending as much time in the great outdoors camping, hunting, hiking and geocaching.


Edward A. Morton

Edward Morton holds the position of Managing Director and is responsible for strategic planning and business development. Mr. Morton joined Wasmer, Schroeder & Company (WSC) in 2007 and has over 40 years of experience in the executive and financial fields. After serving his country as a Captain in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, Mr. Morton began his financial career in 1972 with the NCH Healthcare System. Prior to his retirement at NCH in 2006, Mr. Morton held the positions of Chief Financial Officer, Chief Operating Officer, and for the last six years of his career with NCH, Chief Executive Officer. Through Mr. Morton's leadership, NCH's net-worth doubled from $137.8 million in 2000 to $275.5 million in 2006, during which time NCH achieved several highly recognized awards: the top 5% of all healthcare organizations in the U.S. (2004, 2005, 2006); the top 100 status of all healthcare organizations in the U.S. for overall performance improvement over the past five years (ending in 2006); multiple awards for NCH cardiac programs, including Code Save A Heart; and acquired the area's first CyberKnife, Da Vinci Surgical System robot and PET/CT scanner technology.


Mr. Morton holds a B.A. in Accounting from the University of Notre Dame, an M.B.A. from the University of Miami and an M.S. in Health Science from Florida Gulf Coast University. He is Director of the Leadership Collier Foundation; Director of the Greater Naples Area Chamber of Commerce; Trustee of the Youth Development Foundation (Quest); Trustee of the Moorings Park Institute; Trustee of the Healthcare Network of Southwest Florida Foundation; Community Board Member of the Lee Memorial Health System, and is a member of the Board of Governors of the State University System of Florida.

Mr. Alex "Pete" Hart
​Former CEO of MasterCard International


Alex W. "Pete" Hart is a consultant in consumer services, specializing in payment services and consumer finance. His particular focus is on emerging technologies and their impact on distribution strategies. Until 1997, he served as Chief Executive Officer of Advanta Corporation, a diversified financial services company. From 1988 to 1994, Pete was President and Chief Executive Officer of MasterCard International, the worldwide payment service provider. Concurrently he also served as Chairman of the Board of Maestro International, the global debit system, and was a member of the board of directors of Europay International. Before joining MasterCard, Pete spent ten years at First Interstate Bancorp, first as President and CEO of First Interstate Services Company, the system-wide technology and operations subsidiary. Later he served as Executive Vice President of Consumer Banking and Operations at the holding company. While there he became the founding Chairman of the Board of the Cirrus System, today the world's largest network of shared automated teller machines. Prior to First Interstate, Pete held a variety of consumer banking and marketing positions at First Chicago Corporation and BancOhio. In April of 2012, Pete retired as Chairman of the Board of the Silicon Valley Bank and SVB Financial. He is currently Chairman of VeriFone, Inc. (PAY), and is a director of Mitek Systems Inc (MITK), and BrightVolt, a private company offering micro-powered solutions for a variety of applications. In addition to SVB Financial, Pete has been a director of FICO, Global Payments, Inc, eHarmony,, Retek, HNC Software and Sanchez Computers. He is also an advisor to a number of private companies. Pete graduated from Harvard College in 1962. He resides in Naples, Florida and Rancho Santa Fe, California.​




Senator Garrett Richter

Garrett and Diana Richter have been married 42 years. They both smile with great pride and joy when talking about their three children, Melissa, Elizabeth and Robert and their five grandchildren, Ian, Leah, Santiago, Ignacio and Francisco. Senator Richter has served as president and director of First Florida Integrity Bank since the bank's opening in 2009 and as president of TGR Financial, Inc. since 2011. He served as the President Pro Tempore of the Florida Senate from 2012 to 2016.  He completed his final term as a Florida State Senator in November 2016. During his tenure in the Florida Senate, Garrett was chairman of the Senate Banking and Insurance Committee, the Senate Committee on Gaming and the Senate Committee on Ethics and Elections. He also served as chairman of the Florida Defense Task Force and the Public Service Commission Nominating committee. Additionally, he served on the Appropriations and Rules committees along with a number of other policy related committees. In 2016, the Florida Bankers Association's named Garrett the Banker of the Year for demonstrating his commitment to the banking industry and service to his community. He is a founding trustee of the Quest for Success program that focuses on improving the life of a child through education and a board member of the Greater Naples Chamber of Commerce, and the Collier County Economic Accelerator. He is an alumni and past Board of Regents member for Leadership Florida and past chairman of Leadership Collier. Garrett served with the 75th Ranger Company in Vietnam. In 1971 he was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, a Bronze Star, and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry. Garrett is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh and the Graduate School of Banking at Madison, Wisconsin.​




Dr. H. Shelton Weeks, PhD

Dr. H. Shelton Weeks is the Department Chair of Economics & Finance; Lucas Professor of Real Estate and director of the Lucas Institute for Real Estate Development & Finance at Florida Gulf Coast University. Dr. Weeks received his BS, MA, and PhD in finance from The Un​iversity of Alabama. He was a member of the inaugural faculty at Florida Gulf Coast University. He is the Co-Editor of the Journal of Real Estate Practice & Education and serves on the editorial board of Journal of Economics and Finance Education and the academic review panel for The Appraisal Journal. He teaches in the areas of corporate finance, investments and real estate. He has published multiple articles on pedagogical issues, corporate governance, and real estate. Dr. Weeks has extensive industry experience in valuation of real property with an emphasis on senior living projects. He is a member of the American Real Estate Society.
