General Mills is notable for holding the number 1 or number 2 position in virtually every category in which it competes. Some of its most recognized brands include Cheerios, Wheaties, Pillsbury, Betty Crocker, Yoplait, Haagen Dazs ice cream, Green Giant vegetables, Nature Valley granola bars, Progresso Soups, Hamburger Helper, and Old El Paso, #1 brand in U.S. Mexican aisle products. General Mills recently expanded meaningfully into China and most recently acquired the largest food company in Brazil.
General Mills is on Fortune magazine's list of the World's Most Admired Companies and was recognized by Forbes magazine in 2012 as "The Most Reputable Company in America." General Mills recently offered investors a dividend yield of 3.2% on a dividend that has been increased every year at a compound annual growth of 11% over the past five years.
The company's compound annual shareholder return has been 13% per year from 1961 and was 10% for the five years ended in 2011, the latter compares with 0% for the S&P. Volatility (beta of .37) is less than half of the market's volatility. General Mills dropped from 30 to 23 (-23%) in the 2008-2009 bear market compared with the S&P 500 decline of 57%.
