If you are a charter pending or CFA Program Level III candidate, you are a few steps away to earn your CFA® charter.

1. Become a CFA Charteholder

To earn a globally recognized professional designation - Chartered Financial Analyst® (CFA®), one must meet the following criteria and become a Regular Member of CFA Institute: 

  1. Pass CFA Exams
  2. Achieve qualified work experience
  3. Submit reference letters
  4. Apply to become a CFA charterholder

2. Access the Application from CFA Institute

3. Membership Application: Regular Membership

Applications should confirm/update your personal information, such as name, address, and phone number.

4. Pick a Society

When applying for a membership with CFA Institute, applications will also apply for membership in a CFA Society. 

5. Qualifying Work Experience

Applicants should meet the acceptable professional work experience requirement of 4,000 hours, completed in a minimum of 36 months. This requirement can be completed before, during, or after participation in the CFA Program.

When providing work experience details, applications are required to:

  • Enter the average number of hours they work per week;
  • Enter the percentage of time they spend performing work that meets the work experience requirement;
    • At least 50% of the time should be spent directly involved in the investment decision-making process
  • Indicate how job duties produce work products that add value.  

Examples of acceptable and qualifying work experience may refer to:

  • Evaluating or applying financial, economic, and/or statistical data as part of the investment decision-making process
  • Supervising persons who conduct such activities; or
  • Teaching such activities.

6. Professional References

In order to meet the reference requirement, applications should provide: 

  • Three (3) professional references; or
  • Two (2) professional references if one (1) is an active regular member of the society they are applying to.

7. Submit and Check your Application Status

When all steps are complete, applicants can review everything they have entered. The applications must check the box at the bottom of the page to confirm that their information is true and correct. 

Applicants can navigate the 'My Account' Dashboard and click the Membership title to see their current application status. 

CFA Institute may take up to ten (10) business days to review regular membership applications. The applications will be notified of the final decision via email.

8. Activate your Membership

After receiving an approval email from CFA Institute, the applicants should log in to their CFA Institute account and click the Membership tile to:

  1. Verify their personal and professional information
  2. Complete the Professional Conduct Statement (PCS)
  3. Click the checkbox to the CFA Institute Membership Agreement
  4. Pay the membership fees dues (pro-rated dues scheduled for new members)
  5. Checkout to complete their order
