    Alternative Investments Conference 2026

    Jul 15, 09:00 AM - 05:00 PM (EAT)
Executive Summary The 4th Alternative Investment Conference will convene institutional investors, policymakers, asset managers, and industry leaders to explore how alternative investments can unlock new sources of capital for sustainable growth in East Africa. As global markets shift, investors are increasingly turning to private markets, natural capital, commodities, and impact investments to diversify portfolios and access long-term opportunities. East Africa, with Uganda at its center, offers significant potential due to its natural resource endowment, entrepreneurial ecosystem, and growing demand for long-term capital. This one-day conference, followed by a gala dinner and recognition ceremony, will provide a platform for dialogue, knowledge exchange, and partnership building. It will highlight opportunities in nature capital;commodities, particularly gold; and private markets, while celebrating professional excellence and the growing community of investment leaders shaping the region’s capital markets. Why This Conversation Matters Global investment dynamics are shifting as traditional asset classes alone no longer meet long-term portfolio objectives. Institutional investors are increasing allocations to alternative assets, while emerging economies urgently need long-term capital for infrastructure, enterprise growth, and sustainable resource management. East Africa’s rapid economic growth, entrepreneurial dynamism, and rising global investor interest make this a pivotal moment. Unlocking these opportunities requires collaboration between investors, policymakers, and financial institutions to build frameworks that mobilize capital for sustainable development. In doing so, the conference directly advances global priorities—supporting SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) through enterprise financing, SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure) by mobilizing capital for infrastructure and innovation, SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 15 (Life on Land) through nature capital and biodiversity investments, and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) by fostering collaboration across sectors. Strategic Value of the 4th Edition Since its inception, the Alternative Investment Conference has become a leading platform for dialogue on private capital and alternative assets in East Africa: 2023: Reimagined private capital in institutional portfolios 2024: Catalyzed private capital for financial and social impact 2025: Strengthened investor readiness for alternative opportunities The 2026 edition builds on this momentum by introducing cutting-edge conversations on geopolitics, tokenization, and AI-driven investment management, alongside deep dives into nature capital and commodities. By convening global and regional leaders, the conference positions Uganda as a hub for alternative investment dialogue and innovation. It also reinforces professional excellence through sessions spotlighting charterholder entrepreneurs and career pathways, culminating in the gala dinner celebrating newly awarded charterholders. This blend of visionary topics and talent development ensures the conference delivers both strategic foresight and practical impact for sponsors, delegates, and speakers. Conference Objectives Showcase investable opportunities in East Africa’s alternative asset classes. Facilitate high-level dialogue between investors, policymakers, and industry leaders on mobilizing long-term capital. Promote innovation and impact by aligning financial returns with environmental and social outcomes. Elevate professional excellence by inspiring emerging talent and reinforcing ethical leadership in investment practice. Strengthen partnerships that drive sustainable growth and position East Africa as a frontier investment destination. Key Themes Alternative Investing, Geopolitics & the Tenfold Growth Agenda: Examining how global shifts in geopolitics and capital flows will shape East Africa’s growth trajectory.  Tokenization & Next-Generation Capital Markets: Exploring how blockchain and digital assets are transforming private markets and institutional investment strategies. Nature Capital & Sustainability: Demystifying natural capital as an asset class—biodiversity, carbon markets, and climate-related investments that deliver returns and impact. Commodities & Strategic Assets: Understanding the role of gold and other commodities as portfolio diversifiers, inflation hedges, and drivers of economic value. Investment Leadership & Talent Pathways: Spotlighting charterholder entrepreneurs and equipping emerging professionals with skills to succeed in the AI era. Expected Outcomes Increased awareness of alternative investment opportunities in East Africa. Strengthened partnerships among investors, policymakers, and financial institutions. Deeper understanding of sustainable and impact-oriented strategies. Greater institutional participation in private markets and alternative assets. Inspiration for emerging professionals to lead the region’s investment future. Resources AIC 3-Year Impact Report AIC 2026 Concept Note AIC 2026 Program AIC Sponsorship Tiers

Inaugural CFAOC Book Club! (Members Only)

    Jul 23, 05:30 PM - 07:30 PM (PT)
Join CFA Society Orange County for a members-only, in-person book club event on Thursday, July 23rd from 5:30-7:30pm. The featured book will be AI Snake Oil: What Artificial Intelligence Can Do, What It Can’t, and How to Tell the Difference from authors Arvind Narayanan & Sayash Kapoor. Join us for an evening of books, discussion, and happy hour! Register Here! Book Description: AI is everywhere—and few things are surrounded by so much hype, misinformation, and misunderstanding. In AI Snake Oil, computer scientists Arvind Narayanan and Sayash Kapoor cut through the confusion to give you an essential understanding of how AI works, why it often doesn't, where it might be useful or harmful, and when you should suspect that companies are using AI hype to sell AI snake oil—products that don't work, and probably never will. While acknowledging the potential of some AI, such as ChatGPT, AI Snake Oil uncovers rampant misleading claims about the capabilities of AI and describes the serious harms AI is already causing in how it's being built, marketed, and used in areas such as education, medicine, hiring, banking, insurance, and criminal justice. The book explains the crucial differences between types of AI, why organizations are falling for AI snake oil, why AI can't fix social media, why AI isn't an existential risk, and why we should be far more worried about what people will do with AI than about anything AI will do on its own. The book also warns of the dangers of a world where AI continues to be controlled by largely unaccountable big tech companies. By revealing AI's limits and real risks, AI Snake Oil will help you make better decisions about whether and how to use AI at work and home.
