CFA Institute Research Challenge

The CFA Institute Research Challenge is an annual global competition that connects university students with investment professionals from within the CFA Society® network. The competition provides students with hands-on mentoring and intensive training in financial analysis and ethics and tests participants' analytical, valuation, reporting writing, and presentation skills.

Members of our society, along with a faculty advisor and an industry mentor, work with teams of students to value a stock, write a research report, and present their recommendations. Teams then compete with peers from other schools at local-level competitions organized and judged by CFA Society members and volunteers. The winning university team(s) from each local competition then advances to see who will become the sub-regional, regional, and global champions.

Research Challenge at CFA Society Nevada

Every year for the last eleven years the UNLV team has competed in the CFA Institute Research Challenge. In 2013, the illustrious UNLV undergraduate team was the winner of the Americas region and travelled to London to compete in the global competition. They analyzed Kona Grill with Prof. Dominic Rodrigues as their industry mentor and Prof. Jagdish Mehta as their university mentor. Our UNLV team has almost always progressed to Phoenix in the competition and has also progressed to the Americas regional competition a few times. The UNLV graduate team during 2020-2021 progressed to the Americas competition.

During the ongoing 2022-2023 CFA Institute Research Challenge, one of two participating UNLV teams advanced to the next stage, where students from the top five teams will be presenting their research papers in March 2023. The winner of this next phase will advance to the Americas Challenge, which will be held in April 2023.

We congratulate both UNLV teams for their hard work and wish them continued success.
