Insurance workshop - balance sheet management game

When:  Mar 27, 2025 from 06:30 PM to 09:30 PM (BE)
Associated with  CFA Society Belgium

✅ Insurance companies use assets to ensure future benefit payments to their clients. In this workshop you will gain insights on the main challenges insurance companies encounter managing their balance sheets. CFA curriculum related topics like duration, interest rate matching, and hedging strategies will be discussed from a theoretical and practical/game perspective.

Servaas Houben will provide a short introduction on the types of insurance, historical developments, and financial statement analysis. The latter topic will then be discussed in more detail during the game coordinated by Marcel and Oscar, which is the main component of the event. During the game participants will play in teams when managing a fictual insurance company. Each team needs to make strategic decisions which are translated into balance sheet metrics. The game environment will provide automatic feedback to the participants what buttons insurance companies have to manage their risks, and what the impact of actions has on the profitability and solvency of the company.

✅ The workshop environment ensures quick feedback loops, interaction with other team members and the coordinators, and a steep learning curve so by the end of the session participants will come away with a clear understanding on the challenges and opportunities for insurance companies, and how asset managers and portfolio advisors can provide value
