Steven Becton is the Chief Officer of Equity, Inclusion and Belonging for the international educational foundation Facing History and Ourselves. He has over 20 years of experience in diversity, equity, and inclusion. He writes and speaks for Facing History on diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging issues in and beyond the classroom. He presents at national conferences, writes blogs, and conducts workshops and webinars for educators and for the larger community centered on having courageous conversations about race and education. He is a skilled facilitator and experienced presenter. Steve leads a team of Facing History staff who are working deeply in schools to create whole school culture and transformational educational experiences that would equip educators, while also empowering students to overcome the systemic issues that have placed them at risk. Dr. Becton also has worked with non school audiences listed below.
When called on to keynote and speak on panels, Becton speaks with authority on the present day challenges in education and weaves in personal stories of his own journey from a single-parent home in inner city Memphis to a professional life and doctoral studies. He has a unique way of disarming audiences, allowing them to have the hard conversations. He is often quoted as saying, “Conversations about race and other differences must be done courageously but always in a safe environment free from blame and shame.”
Becton joined the staff of Facing History in 2001 after 11 years of exemplary teaching. He was recognized nationally as a leader among educators, earning Junior Achievement’s State Teacher of the Year Award in 2005. He is also a 2008 Graduate of Leadership Memphis. In 2011, Tri-State Defender recognized him as one of its 100 Outstanding Black Men. In 2008, he was inducted into the Rhodes College Hall of Fame in recognition of his outstanding football, academic, and community service accomplishments.
Becton has a BA in Economics from Rhodes College, a Masters Degree in Educational Leadership, and an advanced certificate in Urban Education. He has an earned doctorate from The University of Memphis with a focus on the historical construct of race and its impact on school equity. Becton’s research focuses on the historical construct of race in the United States and its persistent impact on educator mindsets and practices in the context of creating more equitable learning experiences for historically marginalized students. As noted his work expands beyond education as he has helped many other organizations to explore more culturally responsive and equitable practices.
