The Nov-21 Online Charter Award Ceremony and Networking Event
On 30th November 2021, CFA Society Japan hosted the final charter award ceremony of the year. Due to the ongoing pandemic, the event was hosted fully online; however, there was a great turnout. Over 70 attendees gathered to celebrate their tremendous achievement. The President and CEO of CFA Institute, Ms. Margaret Franklin, CFA and the President of CFA Society Japan, Mr. Masato Degawa, CFA shared their congratulatory video messages with the attendees.
In addition to celebrating new charterholders, charter award ceremonies are also a reminder for new members that they are joining a global network of dedicated and skilled financial professionals. It has been customary in past ceremonies for us to hear from industry leaders, and this event was no exception. We were honored to have the opportunity of interviewing, Mr. Scott Callon, CFA, CEO of Ichigo Asset Management. Mr. Callon is also Chairman of Ichigo (2337), Chairman and CEO of Japan Display (6740) and a board member of Fujitsu (6702). He has served on a number of Japanese government bodies, including the Financial Services Agency (FSA) Council of Experts that drafted Japan’s Corporate Governance Code and the Ministry of Economy (METI) Competitiveness and Incentive Structures for Sustainable Growth Project.
Interview with Mr. Callon
Why did you decide to pursue the charter?
Mr. Callon, who is originally from California, shared with us how the CFA program was instrumental in his career. As he moved to Tokyo, the program helped his transition from academia to working at a bank and ultimately in investment management. What Mr. Callon had initially expected to be a three-year path, ended up being a rich journey of lifelong learning and an ongoing process in professional learning.
What message do you have for new charterholders?
Mr. Callon stressed the importance of continuous learning. In the same way that investments risk being exposed to style drift if neglected, professionals can experience a similar drift if they fail to continue to work hard. “If you do not innovate, you are dead. Believe in your capabilities, keep on learning!” Mr. Callon shared how this philosophy has been applied to Ichigo. He referred to this philosophy as Ichigo 10.0, given the continuous changes that have been implemented at the firm over the years. An example is how the company initially started out as a deep value investor and gradually shifted towards quality value. The company adapted to the market’s shift from tangible to intangible assets as tangible hard assets lost their ability to generate value over time.
Any tips for networking?
When asked about any advice regarding networking, Mr. Callon’s stance was clear; rather than being sidetracked in actively networking, professionals should focus on expanding their knowledge and become more valuable in the market. “What you know is going to drive so much more meaning in your life over who you know.” A strong network is driven by the individual’s knowledge and expertise. Following the video interview with Mr. Callon, attendees were then divided into breakout rooms to enjoy the networking portion of the event. 2021年11月30日、日本CFA協会主催の今年度最後のチャーターアワードが開催されました。パンデミックが続いているため、完全オンライン開催となりましたが、多くの方にご参加いただきました。70名を超える出席者が集まり、その偉大な功績を称えました。CFA協会のマーガレット・フランクリン会長兼CEOと日本CFA協会の出川正人会長から、ビデオメッセージでお祝いの言葉が贈られました。
チャーターアワードは、新しいチャーターホルダーを祝うだけでなく、新メンバーにとって、専門的なスキルを持つ金融プロフェッショナルのグローバルネットワークの一員になることを再度実感していただける機会でもあります。これまでの授賞式では、業界のリーダーから話を聞くことが慣例となっており、今回のイベントも例外ではありませんでした。今回は、いちごアセットマネジメントのCEOであるスコット・キャロン氏, CFAにインタビューする機会を得ることができ、大変光栄でした。キャロン氏は、いちごアセットマネジメント（2337）の会長、ジャパンディスプレイ（6740）の会長兼CEO、富士通（6702）の取締役を兼務していらっしゃいます。日本のコーポレートガバナンス・コードを起草した金融庁の有識者会議、経済産業省の「持続的成長のための競争力とインセンティブ」プロジェクト（伊藤レポート）など、日本の政府機関の委員を数多く務めていっしゃいます。
キャロン氏とのインタビュー
なぜ、チャーターを目指そうと思ったのですか？
カリフォルニア出身のキャロン氏は、CFAプログラムが自身のキャリアにいかに役立ったかを語ってくださいました。 東京に移り住み、学問の世界から銀行に就職し、最終的には投資運用の世界へ移行する際に、このプログラムは彼のキャリアを支えてくれました。当初は3年間という短い期間で完了すると思っていらしたキャロン氏ですが、結果的には生涯学習とプロフェッショナル・ラーニングの継続的なプロセスという豊かな旅となったそうです。
新チャーターホルダーへのメッセージは？
キャロン氏は、継続的な学習の重要性を強調しました。投資の見直しを怠るとスタイルドリフトに陥る危険があるように、プロも努力を怠ると同じようなドリフトを経験する可能性があります。
「イノベーションを起こさないでいるのは、死んでいるのと同じ。自分の能力を信じ、学び続けましょう。」
キャロン氏は、この哲学がいちごアセットマネジメントにどのように生かされているかを話してくださいました。この哲学を、キャロン氏は「Ichigo 10.0」と名づけました。例えば、いちごアセットマネジメントは当初はディープ・バリュー投資家としてスタートし、徐々にクオリティ・バリューにシフトしていきました。また、市場が有形固定資産から無形固定資産へシフトしていき、有形固定資産の価値創造力が失われる中で、同社はそれに適応してきました。
人脈作りのコツがあれば教えてください。
「人脈作りのコツは？」という質問に対して、キャロン氏は、「積極的に人脈作りをするよりも、知識を増やして、自身の市場価値を高めることに注力すべき」という明快に答えてくださった。「何を知っているかということは、誰を知っているかということよりも、自分の人生に大きな意味をもたらします。」 強力なネットワークは、個人の知識と専門性によって生み出されます。
