It’s time for our Florida Gulf Coast University Student Spotlight! Our goal is to highlight young women who are ready to make a career in finance.

This month's spotlight is on Josie Hoberman, who is double majoring in Financial Analysis & Management and International Business Management. She is set to graduate in December 2023. Originally from Holland, Michigan, her family relocated to Venice, FL.
Josie is interested in continued engagement and networking with local professionals in SWFL. She can be reached at [email protected] or 941-525-6408.

Why did you choose FGCU and your major?
I chose FGCU for the beautiful campus and its size and feel. Its large but not overwhelming and you’re able to be connected to the people and the education. Class size was important. I was interested in getting international experience, especially through the study abroad program and adding finance on top of international gives me a good balance. Through my business classes, I learned more about finance and wealth management.

What is/was your favorite class at FGCU?
Security Analysis with Professor Tom Matthews. It was a great introduction to financial analysis and the CFA Society, giving me the larger picture of what I could possibly do with a finance degree. I have been enjoying the Personal Financial Planning course as well, as its preparing me for my own financial wellbeing and putting me in a good position to work with clients.

Where have you interned or worked in your field?
This summer, I interned with JP Morgan Private Bank in Naples, working with WIIM co-founder Mia Hyatt. I learned about the financial markets, and how financial advisors tackle financial vulnerability. I learned how to prepare an analysis of a clients assets and liabilities, in an effort to help them achieve their financial goals.

What are your career goals after graduation?
In January I’ll be starting a job at JP Morgan Private Bank in Naples as an Analyst, putting me on the wealth management track to become a banker. I enjoy client interaction and helping people understand their finances and the whole picture of their financial situation.

What clubs and/or organizations are you involved in at FGCU?
I’ve been the President of the International Business Association on campus for the past 2 years. It includes students of all majors and those that have interest in anything international. We have guest speakers, hold workshops and connect students with opportunities and careers, and help them grow their professional skills. I belong to Beta Gamma Sigma, the International Business Honors Society, the Lutgert Mentorship Program and the Lutgert College of Business Student Advisory Board.

One "Fun Fact" about yourself.
I’ve studied abroad in Bolivia, Saudi Arabia and the UAE. Saudi Arabia was my favorite because the culture and the people are so different than what I’m used to, taking me to places like the Edge of the World, in the middle of the dessert.
