CFA Society Virginia Stock Pitch Competition 2026

    Apr 7, 03:00 PM - 06:30 PM (ET)
Join us for our 3rd CFA Society Virginia Stock Pitch Competition as we welcome teams from six Virginia universities to the competition. The competition has many of the same foundations as the CFA Research Challenge, but we allow teams to choose their own company and we are emphasizing the in-person presentation more than the written report. Each presentation will consist of an 8-minute presentation and 3 minutes of Q&A. We have 9 teams participating this year from Christopher Newport University, Hampden-Sydney College, James Madison University, University of Richmond, University of Virginia, and Virginia Commonwealth University. The presentations will be followed by a reception and presentation of the results.  Come out and support the teams!

The Momentum Factor: A Market Anomaly, It's Alpha Benefits, and Style-Conscious Applications

    Apr 29, 04:30 PM - 06:30 PM (ET)
Please join us for a Presentation & Happy Hour at The Hofheimer Building, as CFA Society Virginia presents Travis Prentis, CEO of The Informed Momentum Company (IMC). Travis Prentice will provide an overview of momentum, discuss common misconceptions about the factor – including its perceived riskiness as well as momentum crashes, share thoughts on the dynamic relationship between momentum and value, and how momentum differs from growth. Momentum has long been a significant source of returns for investors, yet there are many misconceptions about its existence, its riskiness, and how to properly harness its strength across global markets. IMC will provide an overview of the momentum factor, share thoughts on why it exists and persists, discuss how momentum’s formation path and lookback periods can influence performance in portfolio applications, and differentiate naïve momentum from Informed Momentum, a mechanism to translate the academia of momentum into tangible results for investors. Included in the overview will be a discussion on common myths related to the perceived risks of the factor. Finally, IMC will provide various frameworks in which momentum can be beneficial to, or even replace, traditional style exposures in equity portfolios.
