Book Club: Third Millennium Thinking: Creating Sense in a World of Nonsense Ch 1 - 11

When:  Jun 25, 2024 from 05:00 PM to 06:00 PM (PT)
Associated with  CFA Society Seattle

Third Millennium Thinking is based on a UC Berkeley course focusing on how scientists’ tricks of the trade can be used to make the best decisions and solve the hardest problems in the current age of uncertainty and overwhelming information. The book discusses how people can achieve a ground-level understanding of the facts of the modern world, how to chart a course through a profusion of possibilities and how to work together to take on the challenges we face today. The authors lay out some questions to ask (ourselves and others), the ways to separate facts from opinions, how to distinguish reliable information from background noise, how to think in terms of probabilities instead of absolutes, and how to incorporate personal values. The book provides approaches that can be used to answer questions such as, "How do we make health decisions in the face of conflicting medical advice? Does the research cited in that article even show what the authors claim? How can we navigate the next Thanksgiving discussion with our in-laws, who follow completely different experts on the topic of climate change?".
