Investing in U.S. Financial History: Understanding the Past to Forecast the Future

    May 8, 12:00 PM - 01:00 PM (PT)

Investors who neglect to study the past are forced to rely primarily on their life experience to make decisions. This often causes them to overlook powerful, cyclical forces that repeatedly reshape economies and markets. Mark Higgin’s book, Investing in U.S. Financial History, fills this void by recounting the full financial history of the United States. It begins with Alexander Hamilton’s brilliant financial programs in 1790 and ends with the Federal Reserve’s battle to contain inflation in 2023.

Higgins will provide an overview of several important lessons from financial history. The event will provide attendees with a glimpse of how a deep understanding of financial history can improve investment decision-making. Those who read the book in advance may gain more insight from the event. The format will consist of an approximately 30 minute discussion and 30 minutes of Q&A.

CFA Society Seattle Book Club: Narrative Economics: How Stories Go Viral and Drive Major Economic Ev

    May 14, 05:00 PM - 06:00 PM (PT)

    We will cover chapters 11 - 19

Robert Shiller’s Narrative Economics is about how economic narratives form, spread, and fade. The book describes how contagious narratives that people told one another influenced human behavior in ways that altered the course of economic events. The book argues that economists should integrate narratives into their models and theories of human behavior, making the case that our brains are hardwired to respond to stories. He presents a list of popular narratives that have affected economic attitudes, behaviors, and outcomes through history. He shows that narratives tend to recur, albeit with mutations that fit each historical era. The book explains how economic fluctuations are substantially driven by contagion of oversimplified and easily transmitted variants of economic narratives.
