What’s in it for me?

While we believe ‘ask not what your Society can do for you, but what you can do for your Society’ and encourage you to give back to this industry, we appreciate time is scarce and people genuinely seek an answer to this question.

Volunteers

Volunteering for a CFA Society offers numerous benefits, including expanding your professional network, contributing to the investment community, and enhancing your skills and knowledge. You can also gain visibility as an active participant and potentially boost your career prospects.

Here's a more detailed breakdown of the reasons to volunteer:

  • Networking and Professional Development:
    • Connect with Peers and Leaders: Volunteering provides opportunities to meet like-minded professionals and industry leaders, fostering valuable connections.
    • Expand Your Network: You can build relationships with other members and gain insights into different areas of the investment industry.
    • Enhance Skills: Volunteering allows you to develop and refine skills like leadership, communication, teamwork, and project management.
    • Gain Knowledge: You can share your expertise, learn from others, and stay up-to-date on industry trends.
  • Contributing to the Investment Community:
    • Promote Ethical Standards: Volunteering helps support the CFA Institute's mission to promote ethics, education, and professional excellence.
    • Give Back to the Profession: You can contribute to the development of future investment professionals and the advancement of the industry.
    • Shape the Society: Your involvement helps shape the society's activities, events, and initiatives.
  • Career Advancement:
    • Boost Your Resume: Volunteering demonstrates initiative, leadership, and a commitment to the profession, which can enhance your resume and career prospects.
    • Gain Visibility: As an active participant, you gain recognition within the investment community.
    • Open New Opportunities: Volunteering can lead to new career paths and opportunities within the investment industry.
  • Personal Growth:
    • Fill Downtime Productively: Volunteering allows you to engage in meaningful activities and contribute to something larger than yourself.
    • Demonstrate Risk-Taking: Volunteering shows that you are willing to step outside your comfort zone and take on new challenges.
    • Access Professional Learning Credits:  CFA societies can offer Professional Learning (PL) credits for volunteering, which can help you meet continuing education requirements.

Associate Directors and Directors

Gain governance experience from working directly alongside Society directors and be involved in shaping the Society’s strategy and its impact in New Zealand. Volunteering in this capacity offers a chance to contribute meaningfully to the Board, develop leadership skills, and gain valuable experience, ultimately making a positive impact and fostering a sense of purpose.

  • Making a Difference:

Volunteer directors play a crucial role in the success and longevity of community organisations, helping them achieve their missions and make a real impact.

  • Leadership Development:

Volunteering hones key leadership skills like listening, empathy, resilience, and decision-making, which are valuable in various aspects of life and career. Work alongside existing leaders and get the chance to take on key roles.

  • Strengthening Professional Experience:

Taking on a volunteer board position can enhance your professional experience and demonstrate your commitment to leadership and community involvement.

  • Gaining Insight and Experience:

By volunteering, you gain firsthand experience in how organisations function and the challenges they face, allowing you to contribute more effectively.

  • Fostering a Sense of Purpose:

Contributing to a cause you believe in can bring a sense of fulfillment and purpose, knowing your efforts are making a positive difference.

  • Networking Opportunities:

Volunteering can provide opportunities to network with like-minded individuals and build relationships within the investment community.

  • Developing Governance Skills:

You can develop skills in areas like strategic planning, problem solving and corporate governance. The Society will look to support select Directors with Institute of Directors Chartered Membership and Continuing Professional Development to help bring best practices directly to the board and encourage director development.
