Top Talks Governance, a high-level discussion on the role of financial oversight in corporate governance and its contribution to productivity and value creation. The event brought together experienced leaders from the corporate and audit communities to examine how financial oversight works in practice, beyond formal governance models.
Moderated by Marcos Soares Ribeiro, President of CFA Society Portugal, the debate focused on the challenges and limits of financial supervision across different governance frameworks, from audit committees to supervisory boards. Panelists, including senior figures from major Portuguese companies and professional services firms, shared insights into the dynamics of governance, the importance of constructive debate among board members, and the critical role of appointing the right individuals to oversight roles.
The discussion highlighted that there is no one “perfect” model of governance; effective oversight can be achieved under various structures when it is aligned with the reality and needs of the organisation. What ultimately differentiates good governance is not the model itself but the quality and competence of the people involved, and the strength of interactions among governing bodies.
Speakers also emphasised that governance is more than compliance with formal rules. True oversight adds value by contributing to strategic decisions, promoting transparency, and fostering a culture of informed challenge. Experienced non executive directors, especially those with financial expertise, were identified as essential in providing oversight that supports long term organisational success.
The event underscored the growing complexity of financial matters and the need for boards to dedicate sufficient time and expertise to oversight, particularly as companies navigate an increasingly dynamic economic and regulatory environment.
