Our Mission

We envision a CFA Society South Africa that is widely recognised and highly valued by the investment communities and broader societies across Southern Africa. We are a Society that:

  • Leverages the CFA Institute’s innovative and flexible financial education strategies to address the learning preferences of investment professionals as they navigate their careers across a changing business and operating landscape; and allowing investment professionals to address long term challenges.
  • Strengthens ethical standards within the financial industry and enforce professional standards  to build more principled, responsible and trusted investment industry. 
  • Promote thought leadership within the industry by conducting research, publishing insights, and organizing events that shape industry thinking.

JENNIFER HENRY, CFA, FRM

President

Jennifer is the Deputy CIO: STANLIB Multi-Manager and INN8 Invest. She was a highly rated sell-side analyst covering Media, Electronics and IT Stocks first at Nedgroup Securities and then SBG Securities. In addition to being a CFA Charterholder Jennifer is a certified Financial Risk Manager (FRM).​

THATO MASHIGO, CFA, CAIA

Vice-President

Thato is a Portfolio Manager at Sanlam Private Wealth. He is a member of the National Working Committee of 100 Women in Finance South Africa and sits on the Group Advisory Committee for the City of Johannesburg.
Thato has 12 years' experience in banking and investments, having worked at Citigroup, Credit Suisse, BNP Paribas and currently Sanlam. He holds an Economics degree from Rhodes University; a Finance (Hons) degree from the University of Cape Town; and is completing a Masters in Finance degree at INSEAD. He also holds the CFA and CAIA designations.

CHEREE DYERS, CFA, CA(SA)

Treasurer

Cheree Dyers, CA (SA) & CFA, was appointed as CEO of Prescient Investment Management in February 2018, where she drives the company's strategy. Cheree joined Prescient in 2005 as Head of Finance and Risk Management at Prescient Investment Management and served as a member of the Board. In 2007 she joined Prescient Securities where she contributed to the success of the firm as an Executive Director, Rated Research Analyst, Head of Equities and CEO for 2.5 years until joining Prescient Investment Management. She has a Bachelor of Business Science (Honours) (Marketing) degree, a B.Com degree and a post-graduate diploma in Accounting (all from UCT). She is a qualified Chartered Accountant, a CFA charter holder and a member of the South African Institute of Stockbrokers.

RAAZIA GANIE, CFA

Board Member

Raazia is the Executive Head of Investments within NMG Benefits and heads up the Investment Consulting team. She has extensive experience both locally and abroad dealing with institutional funds of different complexities ranging from retirement funds, medical aids, beneficiary funds and trusts amongst others. She is focused on ensuring clients receive high quality advice, while also maintaining good governance and improving member outcomes in the process. 

 

Raazia has a B. Com in Information Systems from the University of Cape Town and is also a CFA charterholder. Raazia has 26 years of investment experience which spans both the South African as well as UK industries.

LWANDO MONI, CFA, FRM

Board Member

Lwando is currently a Deputy Director: Treasury & Investment Management at the Compensation Fund where he has the responsibility of managing investment portfolios of more than R 70 billion through the Public Investment Corporation (PIC).  He has over 12 years working experience in treasury, investments, economic research and auditing.  In addition to being a CFA Charterholder, he is a certified Financial Risk Manager (FRM). He holds BComm Economics & Finance from UCT, BComm (Hons) Financial Economics from Stellenbosch University and a Post Graduate Diploma in Management (Accounting) from UCT.

DESLIN NAIDOO, CFA

Board Member

Deslin has recently left the corporate industry to explore the possibilities of the convergence of investments and technology.  He has recently completed his certification in Applied Machine Learning through Columbia Engineering and has founded Nebula IQ, a business advisory, investment analytics and fintech startup. He is one of few individuals in the South African market to have held senior investment and executive roles in credit risk (financial services), buy-side (asset management), sell-side (stockbroking) and asset consulting roles. 

AUSTIN CHIJIKWA, CFA

Board Member

Austin is the Head Investment Banking at Zambia National Commercial Bank in Lusaka, Zambia. He has over a decade of experience in banking covering areas including investment banking, treasury, corporate finance, strategy and business performance. Austin is a CFA charterholder and holds a Bachelors in Economics and Management from Edith Cowan University. 

NOMATHIBANA OKELLO, CFA

Board Member

Nomathibana is the Managing Director (MD) of Cape Town-based boutique asset management firm, Terebinth Capital, where she is an equity partner and Senior Portfolio Manager. In her role as MD, she oversees the strategic direction of the business. She also has Portfolio Management responsibilities across the Fixed Income product set, including Income, Bond and Hedge mandates. Nomathibana has a Master of Philosophy degree, with a major in Mathematics of Finance and a Bachelor of Business Science, with a major in Actuarial Science from the University of Cape Town. 

SHAMIER KHAN, CFA, CA(SA)

Board Member

Shamier is a client director in Ninety One’s South African institutional team. His responsibilities include servicing some of the large asset consultants in South Africa and their associated clients as well as assisting on a number of institutional relationships.

Prior to joining Ninety One Shamier was an analyst and portfolio manager at Element Investment Managers. He managed domestic equity, global equity and multi-asset portfolios’. He was also a member of the executive committee and managed several institutional client relationships; and was actively involved in the integration of ESG within the investment process. Before joining Element Investment Managers he was an analyst and portfolio manager at Sanlam Investment Management. 

Shamier holds a Bachelor of Commerce and Post Graduate Diploma in Accounting from the University of Cape Town. He is a chartered accountant (South Africa) and CFA® charterholder.

NICOLA COMNINOS, CFA

Board Member

Nicola Comninos, CFA is a director, a loving partner, a mother of three boys, a seasoned financial markets executive, board member and pension fund board trustee and chair with 18 years’ experience in group risk, strategy, sustainability, capital markets, trading, investments, and business intelligence. She is passionate about mentorship, financial inclusion, and diversity. Currently she looks after risk, governance, legal, compliance and sustainability as the Chief Risk Officer of Purple Group and its subsidiaries including, but not limited to EasyEquities, EasyCrypto and EasyProperties. As a CFA Charterholder, with investment management degrees she is actively involved in CFA SA Society, 100 Women in Finance, Women in ETFs and holds non-executive board seats at AfricaGlobal Xchange, CFA SA Society and the Institute of Risk Management of South Africa.

DR. MUSIMUNI DOWELANI, CFA

Board Member

Dr. Musimuni is the Head of Department at the University of Johannesburg's Department of Finance and Investment Management (DFIM), located in the College of Business and Economics. She is a trustee of the UJ pension fund and the Investment Committee Deputy Chair. She has worked as an Equity Analyst and an academic in several prestigious South African universities, including the University of Pretoria. She is actively involved in volunteer work with the CFA Institute and CFA Society in South Africa. Her extensive involvement includes serving as a juror for the CFA Society South Africa - Young Analyst Awards, highlighting her commitment to nurturing new talent in the financial industry. Dr. Dowelani’ s research, as demonstrated in her PhD thesis titled "Blockchain Technology Adoption in the Securities Clearing and Settlement Industry in South Africa," focuses on the implementation of Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) solutions in the asset management industry. She is concentrating on retirement planning among Black business owners in South Africa. Part of her research in this field received funding from INSETA. Her goal is to develop technologically based solutions that empower and optimize the financial future of this demographic. In addition Dr Dowelani is a Member of International Conference in Financial Services (ICFS) - Scientific Member. The ICFF is hosted the UNISA's Department of Finance and Risk Management and Banking. 

RANGA MAKWATA, CFA

Board Member

Ranga Makwata is a seasoned investment professional with expertise in investment analysis, management, stockbroking, and advisory services. He founded Fincent Capital, a boutique firm focused on securities trading and corporate advisory, and is a director and shareholder at Zfn Capital, a leader in economic research and financial news. He chairs Convex Capital, a Microfinance firm, and serves on the boards of Dawn Property Consultancy, the ZNCC’s Macroeconomic Committee, and NUST’s Finance Department Advisory Board. Ranga holds a B.Comm (Finance) Honours, an MBA from National University of Science and Technology, and a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from the University of Zimbabwe. He is also a lawyer with a strong interest in securities law and corporate transactions. A CFA charterholder, Ranga serves as Vice President of IPAZ and is an active volunteer for both IPAZ and the CFA Institute.
